[Solved] Created DVD's won't play
« on: April 11, 2010, 04:08:26 PM »
I have an .avi file of a movie that I have converted to DVD using DeVeDe and then burned with k3b.  All went well and there were no error's, unfortunately they won't play in a dvd player.

I'm using PCLOS 2009 with kde4.  I burned it to a dvd-r disc.  What did I miss?  The files are there.  If I open the disc in dolphin and click on the right file the movie plays.  But as it is set up now, nothing works as you expect a dvd to work. :(

Any Idea's?

devede can do multiple tasks, convert a avi to a mpeg compliant video, convert to divx/mp4 or create a iso/dvd structure

which one of those tasks did you followed?

about opening the right file, do you have a video_ts and a audio_ts folders on the dvd?

if not and you burned just a converted avi to mpeg or divx then the dvd player must be capable of use those files

I tried first converting to an iso and second I tried to just create the dvd structure.  Both disc's that I burned do not function.  I do have both a video_ts and audio_ts folders on both disc's.  And before you ask I did burn the iso as an iso in k3b

i didn't asked  :P   ;D

before burn a iso you can try acetoneiso to mount the iso as a dvd and open it on vlc, kaffeine or smplayer, vlc and kaffeine can open the iso and reproduce the contents it has

before creating the dvd you can burn the iso to a dvd+rw and use it on the dvd player to see if it works and avoid waste more dvds

does the dvd player has divx capabilities?  if that is the case just convert the avi or leave it unconverted on a rewritable media and see what the dvd player does with it

Some things do need to be asked if the info is not supplied   ;)  ........  so did you select the correct format for your location/player .....  PAL/NTSC?

Yes, made sure it was set to NTSC.

Update:  I installed acetoneiso and tried playing the iso that DeVeDe creates.  The result is the same, so the fault must be with how the iso is created.

Try creating the DVD with DVDStyler and see if you get a better result.

Yes my player will play dvd-r.  But I was able to determine that it is in the creation of the dvd that is at fault.  I was able to mount the iso and it dosn't play even on the computer.

That's ok, so use MediaInfo for the vob files. Differenz in the files? Only the VTS_01_1.VOB, VTS_02_1.VOB, VTS_02_2.VOB and VTS-02_3.VOB
Post me the output, please  ;)

MCP - You seem to be making things "advanced difficult" with that movie.

> If the movie as *.avi is complete - that is, has Title Page, Menu, Introduction, etc, all you need to do with it is to make it "DVD-Structure" Compliant.

> Drop it into Avidemux window. Click the Blue Button on the bar to check what the Audio is. For a DVD the "usual" Audio is AC3 or AAC at 48000 - not 44100. If it isn't 48000 - go to Audio > Filters > Resampling, check the box, and ensure that the field says '48000'.

> Under Video - go to Configure - at the top, set Encoding Mode at 2-Pass Average Bitrate. Average Bitrate 1000, and Max Bitrate 8000.

> Use 2-Pass as on the First Pass Avidemux is 'mapping' the video for high and low content frames, and to keep the Audio in sync.

> Avidemux will produce a fully Compliant *.mpeg(2) file.

> Import that into DVD-Styler to create a full DVD Fileset - VOBs, *.ifos, *.bups, etc.

> K3b will then burn this to a DVD playable in TV-Players, etc.

PS:- Those with Cameras which produce Video in the MOV container - 640 x 480, Std-HD or Full-HD - can use Avidemux to create *.mpeg files for NTSC or PAL TV. In DVD(lavc) mode, go to Video > Filters, and click "Add Black Borders". To play correctly on a Standard TV - the Video + Borders has to "add up to" 720 x 480 for NTSC, or 720 x 576 for PAL.

- With HD Video, either Std 1280 x 720 or 1920 x 1080 will convert to 720 x 400. Add Borders to make the 400 vertical into 480 for NTSC, or 576 for PAL.

- You can join the resulting *.mpeg files in Avidemux - File > Append - or use them in Kdenlive, to easily do transitions, menus, add music, voiceovers, etc. Kdenlive will render your movie to a K3b writable DVD-Fileset. (If you just want to join them in Avidemux to make a "TV playable" - can use a DVD+RW if your Player uses those, to test - after joining DVD-Styler will create a full DVD-Fileset from the *.mpeg file.)
