(Solved) Intel-hda no sound (new motherboard)
« on: April 06, 2010, 08:33:40 PM »
PClinuxOS kde4 full updated
kernel 2.6.27.31.tex5

Old motherboard asus P5GC-MX/GBL  audio on board, (bad caps) its a basket case, but everything was working up to then.  :P

New board
P5G41-M  audio Intel Corp. 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Def
Everything else works but the sound, which does work in windows xp, boards good.

@ boot I get a line about install ALSA calling alsadriver 1.0.21-1pclos2009.  it then starts HAL deamon .....
then anacron...... followed by bad exit 7 Installation skipped.

From the utilities folder or the konsole the aslaconf script runs and would appear to work.  It sees the right audio but thinks its a card not on motherboard or is there any differance?  even says have fun at the end but we are not having any fun yet. :D  I have also run it from the PCC using hardware detect and the sound card method both of which would act as if this is not a problem, but still an error msg at log in about audio not working.

modprobe.conf
remove snd_hda_intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time -r --ignore-remove snd_hda_intel
install snd_hda_intel /sbin/modprobe --first-time --ignore-install snd_hda_intel

modprobe.d
     sound
          alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
          alias sound-slot-0 snd-hda-intel

Have completely removed with synaptic the dkms alsa and rebooted then re installed the dkms alsa and reboot and a number of other combination's

I hope this audio is supported or am I just missing something here?.

Have you got the kernel-devel package for your kernel installed?

Thanks

"try a livecd on it.. see what that gives..if nothing else copy paste.."

during boot I saw a starting HAL daemon   failed

I get to the desk top and get the same msg device: defualt can't be opened playback invalid argument.  This worked out of the box with other motherboard which is CG945 chipset and this is now G41 and seems the audio is not supported in linux.

"Have you got the kernel-devel package for your kernel installed?"

Yes it is, but it showed an extra header which I installed and tried again.  I got a change in that during boot,  the bad exit code changed from 7 to 10 and skipped installation again.

Oh my worry is setting in  :-[

pupthai,

I wouldn't worry too much yet.

If it is only the sound that does not work, you probably still have the option of using something like this USB sound device sold at Geeks.com and other on line sources.

Of course, it may be difficult finding out which ones actually work with Linux.

Good luck.

Maybe I'm being thick here but isn't that the kernel from a 2009 iso and that iso can't be updated to a 2010 level?
Why?

Only thing I find in BIOS that is sound related is soulthbridge has a choice of AC97 or High Def.   It was High Def so I tried AC97.  seems no change in windows still working and only change for linux was the exit status went back to 7 from 10 and still no install during boot.  The utilities still don't work for sound even if they say they do when they are run.  It sees the sound as 82801G and is happy to set it up but it don't work and I still get audio not working warning when logging in or using any device.

I started with 2009 and kde3.5 last updated Oct.  My plan was to leave this one alone because everything worked and install 2010 fresh when time came, but lost the motherboard.

I changed to highest kernel in 2007 repo in hopes, and then used the task kde4 and got up to this point with 2007 repo.  I could just clean this out and install the 2010 and update that and see where it goes, but how it is acting unless 2010 has other then dkms-alsa 1.0.21-1 then its not going to work ether I would think.

I can just punt for now, lucky thing is this is mostly a windows offline game PC.  Which is maybe why the motherboard burned down. :-X   100's of hours of NASCAR will do that. ::)

As 2010 is imminent, it's probably not worth bothering too much. 2010 will have later kernel and might support it better.

;D  Got my 2010 livecd.  Problem solved audio works out of the box with 2010.  I guess the G41 chipset is not covered in the older kernel.

You may need to open your own topic as this one is marked solved won't been seen by many knowing people and use the output of  lspci command from the terminal which will list your hardware and see what type of audio is on board.  Also try that audio setup in the utility folder.  See if your getting any audio related faults in the boot, by using the verbose mode. (just hit esc a few seconds after it starts booting)
