No Video Player?
« on: April 06, 2010, 06:34:04 PM »
Um I know 2010 beta testing is over but just loaded 2010 beta and screwing around with it and to my surprise no media player at all is installed?

First off can some one remind me what one the beta one was using so I can install it?

and 2 will PCLin 2010 no longer have a media player by default like prier ver of PClin?

Dragon player was split out of the kdemutimedia package so it gets removed on an update. I believe it was decided to go with smplayer instead. You can install whatever you want.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

OK I will install SM then.

I am guessing from your comment that in the final release when ever it comes out will have a media player.

I am guessing the disk had some but I removed them when I ran update which is the very first thing I did before trying to do any thing. I only noticed just now when I tried to open a vid

...

Neal

It is odd but mplayer is not here on my beta 2 shocked the heck out of me. I have always taken for grant that PClin just has what I need. It took me a sec to figure out it was not playing the video because no video player was installed

When I had posted, I was also working on my build box - on PCLinuxOS-LXDE-2010. I had checked and mplayer was there. I hadn't realized it could be gone from beta2. ::) I should have checked. Sorry.

"I am guessing from your comment that in the final release when ever it comes out will have a media player."

in the past if i remember correctly it was kmplayer(pclinux 2007) the default player but smplayer is a better frontend for mplater

in fact mplayer itself can be considered as a frontend for mplayer, mplayer was created as a console tool, the mplayer-gui is a extension created later when gui desktops on linux were popular enough but you still can use mplayer in console(if you know how)

still lots of users abandon kaffeine, mplayer and similar players and just use vlc because it is the easier and faster solution specially since version 1.0

"I have always taken for grant that PClin just has what I need"

we are on the limit of cd rom space

if that wasn't the case all the video players you could want would be present in the livecd

in a livedvd things could be very different

Hi newbi462

One thing to always remember is that the PCLOS LiveCD can only hold (and install) a limited number of apps, therefore it's the norm to use Synaptic to install further apps as required. (we do get spoilt inasmuch as nearly all the apps we need/use are ready out of the box :-)

One easy way of seeing which video apps are in the repo's is to open Synaptic and choose the Sections button (bottom left of screen) and then select Video and that will then show you the available video apps.

A good multi-purpose media app is VLC which you may want to give a whirl.

Actually, whilst your still using a Beta version this may be a good time to try a few apps out which will then give you an idea of what to install on your system after the final PCLOS comes out.

Note: I believe Tex manages to squeeze over 2GB of data on the 695MB CD which I think is pretty good going....

Smplayer is just a front end for mplayer, but it allows you to conveniently do many things that mplayer alone won't do, or would only do on command line.

Currently vlc will not install on my system, there is a missing dependency that I cannot find anywhere.

Also the WMA codec does not work properly, on mplayer, smplayer or  kaffeine. The two audio channels cancel so there is very little sound and of poor quality.
