Diablo II in WINE
« on: April 05, 2010, 02:52:56 PM »
Hello guys, can someone please help me with this? Google is not much help.
I managed to install Diablo II using WINE, and then I tried to set it up using the Diablosetup tool. I got the message that my computer can not run due to lack of DirectX.
I thought that I would try installing DirectX; that did not install.

After that I tried to run the game anyway, the screen went funny and then the animated Blizzard logo turned up. That ran very slow and then I got a black screen where nothing happens.

How do I fix this so that I can play this game? I am seriously addicted to it and the chance to play it on Linux would be nerdvana for me.

It is in my signature, 900 Mhtz Celron CPU, 2 gigs of ram. It is an EEE pc 701SD so i guess that the graphics is a basic 2d Intel chip.

I had this problem with the lord of destruction add on chapter

you need to install the Diablo II patch/update from the site manually.

It should do it on its own but for some reason it wont under wine sometimes.

FYI you might have to uninstall and reinstall as sometimes it wants you to run the patch before you launch at all to get over the error

Is that a patch for diablo II or a patch for WINE to run diablo?

thats a patch for Diablo II. What kind of install did you choose? minimum, typical (or standard i think...), full?

Full install, I always do that as I hate having to swap disks all the time.
So should I add lord of destruction and get the latest patch for that?

Yes the patch is the Diablo II patch the error you are getting at least when I got it was a false positive.

after running the patch from the Diablo II site I was good to go.

here's what i do:

1. Install D2 and LOD as normal.
2. Run D2VidTest.exe and let it do its thing.
3. Apply latest patch from blizzard since as of 1.12 the LOD disk is not required to play.

Usually this is enough to run D2, but there's a bug in wine which wont let D2 detect direct3d capabilities correctly. Here you can find a post that says: "Available Video Modes: DirectDraw or FORCING D3D". Doing that forces diablo to use Direct3D instead of DirectDraw.

Then those 3 steps are usually enough.;D It's advisable to use a fresh wine prefix though.

Hi,

I usually run Diablo II LOD all the time in PCLOS/wine with no problems whatsoever. I haven't lately what with testing the Beta.

My best suggestion is to go to winehq.com and browse the app database for diablo II. The ideas there haven't failed me yet.

Good luck,

Rick.
