XP-Pro can't see CD-drive in VB
« on: April 04, 2010, 02:04:07 PM »
I'm using what I think is the latest version of VB (3.1.2-1pclos2010). When running XP-Pro in it and trying to address the CD-drive, PCLOS takes control of the drive and nothing reaches XP. I've done some searching in the forum and have found nothing, which makes me think that this is probably simply a configuration problem. Could someone help me out, please? Thanks.

Make sure that you have "enable pass through" enabled in Vitrualbox settings.

Hi satuser08

The latest version of VBox is 3.1.6 but you should be able to run your CD with 3.1.2. Do you have Host Drive selected from the VBox > Devices menu?
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

I'm probably being thick  :o , but I can't find a 'Devices' menu anywhere. Only 'File' (preferences?, but no devices) and 'Machine'. Could you be more precise?

And, exploder, I can't find "enable pass through" anywhere, either.

Cheers

satuser083:

Start by selecting the VM, then clicking the Settings icon.

In the Settings window, select Storage. (note the Add Attachment button)

If you don't have your optical drive added already, do it here.

Once you have a drive shown, select it.

Click the CD/DVD Device box, and select the proper device from the small menu.

Make sure the Passthrough box is checked, then click the OK button.

You should be set to go.

Fantastic guide, OP, I'm happy to say that I'd already managed to figure it out for myself, but it's good to have such a clear confirmation that I'd done it correctly. Many thanks to you all.  ;D ;)

If it is all fixed, how about editing your first post and adding [SOLVED] to the subject line.
