3G on pclos-gnome
« on: April 02, 2010, 06:42:38 AM »
hi,

I'm a newbie to Linux & have found pclos kde to be my distro of choice. However I would like to also try pclos gnome (which I have already downloaded) but, unlike the kde version, it will not connect my 3G automatically, it mentions something like "can not download/install ppp, comgt".

I have tried searching the forums but have only found customized threads but nothing about what I am after.

Would it be OK to download from pclos kde the ppp 2.4.4-1pclos2010 & comgt 0.32-1pclos2007 then install them into the gnome version? If so, will I need older versions since my pclos-gnome has not been updated?

Thank you.

P.S.
While I am here I may as well ask; is it possible to install kde & gnome together? When I first installed Linux the magazine that supplied the gnome version mentioned a way to install a few kde files to "give the look of kde but without actually being kde". Can I do this with pclos?

Thx again.

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that one of the thread I found while searching mentioned installing usb_modeswitch (http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67741.0.html), will I need that as well? In other words, what will I need for pclos-gnome that the kde already has (which allows 3G internet without any downloading/installing)?
Thx

Have you considered adding the Gnome desktop to your current 2010 KDE install and that way you can switch between them.

Open Synaptic, do a full Reload and then select the Custom tab at the bottom left of the screen.

Select Tasks > and select either TASK-GNOME (for a Full Gnome DE) or the TASK-GNOME-MINIMAL (which contains less packages and dependencies)

You can then choose at log-in which desktop you want to use.

Unless you know precisely what these packages will do and what affect they may have I'd be very reluctant to do so. Its not a good idea to mix-n-match unless you know exactly what your doing and by your opening comment you are a newbie  ;D

Thank you very much. This is one thing I wanted/preferred.

It is only for the live cd, I would not install the full gnome version without testing it 1st with the live cd. It doesn't matter now though since I prefer pclos 2009-kde3 out of all the distro's I had tried & your above comment makes the chore alot easier. The gnome idea was only for experience.

Thanks again, you have been a great help. ;)

Code: [Select]
"can not download/install ppp, comgt".
it's happening only on livecd mode ! When You will install it on hard drive than it will connect automaticly... I heard about that before... Check it and please let us know...

Thanks,
