upgrade breaks sound
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:25:23 PM »
running PCLOS 2009 on Thinkpad T21. Accidentally hit mark all upgrades thinking it was "updates" so now I have PCLOS 2010.

Sound now broken. no mixer found in kmix which usually means no drivers loaded. Sound was working before.

lsmod and hdwr detect in PCC indicate cirrus logic snd_cs46xx which appear to be loaded but sound icon in tray shows red x.

Ran alsaconf in console which found the card and loaded drivers but still no go. This happened once before on a Dell and I think it had the same sndcard cs46xx  but the drivers required were something else like snd_cs4232 or something . Took quite a while to figure it out.

Any help appreciated.

This situation has got to be frustrating. You might be in somewhat uncharted waters with it. Hopefully someone can help you.  Good Luck is all I can say.  :-\

Well its seems now that I do have sound but kmix finds no mixer hence the red "X" on the tray icon. Have no sofware control , just the Thinkpads volume buttons. Am going to run some tests as per help in PCC sound configuration and will post back.

Thanks

the red "X" most likely mean the channel the mixer is set to control is muted. It doesnt work because it is controlling a mixer you are not using. Right click on the tray icon, click your way into showing the mixer window and play around until you set the icon to control the mixer that goes to your speakers. Try first setting to control "PCM" or "MIC" channels

Thinkpad T21's came with Cirrus Logic Audio either Chipset CS4297A or CS4624

If you have Chipset CS4297A the correct driver is snd-intel8x0 (more common)

If you have Chipset CS4624 the correct driver is snd-cs46xx (less common)

Also when switching audio drivers you gotta reboot.

I think you have to do full reinstall on your laptop instead of upgrading it from 2009 to 2010.
