LXDE-based Minime
« on: March 31, 2010, 12:52:13 PM »
Hi!

PCLXDE 2010 is a little heavy on my old P3 laptop. Is there any plans for a LXDE-based Minime?

Regards

You want a smaller, rather than a full ISO?

Yes, I prefer a user friendly, clean, small and fast OS onto where I can install only the apps I use. I really liked the idea of Tinyme Droplet when it still was a part of Pclos.

It may take a while, but I'll see what I can do.

I think this is a great idea! Especially since KDE4 is not likely going to make a small minime.

Can someone clear this up for me. I thought the desktop environment was the thing that made a difference in speed. How can the number of programs make a difference? A full blown, (every program available installed) LXDE should be just as quck as a bare bones minimum one, correct? It all depends on how many of those programs you have running at once that would make the difference.

I think the advantage of a minime version of PCLXDE is that you can customize which programs you want included and still have the advantage of the fast desktop. Now, of course, if you add the wrong programs, it may not be so fast. But you can start over until you get it right, then remaster.

Typing this post from LXDE Beta2a, Very Nice.... 8) . Have ran into a couple things that annoyed me, only files can be set to "single click" (or at least from what I can tell ). Icons, I imagine there are other choices out there as well. Fought with Conky, but at last I won ;D. Haven't done much else yet and every thing I do will be for naught, as I'm running it only as live for now (saved my conky configs though) . Looked through the main menu and didn't see a list for "remaster me" , will there be one on "Final" ? This may be my next install if it doesn't annoy me too much in the time to come ;). as far as a LXDE MiniMe, that might be interesting  indeed. Not as much fat to trim off with this one as compared to KDE Mini vs. KDE Full , but I've seen a few I could do with out. I really like my MiniMe as it is, But if I need to (for one reason or another) do a new install, then it will be LXDE probably , if I don't reinstall MiniMe :D
Plan to be spontaneous tomorrow.

It is possible to remove apps through Synaptic while in a LiveCD session. Then, in that same session, do the installation to the hard drive.

While in Synaptic go to --> Status --> Installed, click on the header for --> Size so that the packages are ordered biggest to smallest, --> Mark For Removal the programs you don’t want.

Careful with libraries (I never remove libraries) and if you try removing a package that wants to --> Mark Addition Required Changes, DON’T do it if you’re not sure what you are removing!

It’s not LXDE Minime and yeah it’s a little hassle and removing a package doesn’t remove all it’s dependencies, but you can trim a lot of what you don’t need - big offenders first, without them ever getting to the HDD.

Cheers

Jaws,
Yes. If you have enough RAM, you can do that. One GB or more should be enough. The more RAM you have, the more likely you are to succeed.
