VMWAre able to be installed yet?
« on: March 31, 2010, 10:55:14 AM »
I again tried to install VMWare Workstation 6.5.3. I again got the error message :

C header files matching your running kernel were not found. Refer to your distribution's documentation for installation instructions.

glibc-headers-devel is installed.

Anyone know how to fix this?

is that on a 2009 installation? If so, then make sure you use either
- the old gcc (system is not updated) and kernel (+ kernel-devel) 2.6.26.8
- the new gcc (system is updated) and the latest kernel (+ kernel-devel) from the testing section 2.6.32.2 (and please don't blame me if this will bork your system  ::) )

or just wait for the 2010 final where it should work without problems.

So the answer is.. no, VMWare still doesn't work on PCLinuxOS? ...

Did I say No?? Did you try what I suggested? If you have problems with VMWare you could try VirtualBox instead. It is in our repo and tested to work with PCLOS.

You said to either use a non-upgrade system, or to use a testing kernel which may, or may not, bork my system.

My system is already upgraded, and I'm not going to risk borking by using software from testing.

As for VirtualBox, I prefer VMWare. I can easily move VMs between physical machine with VMWare.

Maybe someone can figure out why PCLOS kernel headers aren't being found?

what version of pclinuxos are you using?

some people use what some of us called "the old system" and some of use use what we call "the new system".

The "new system" uses the 2010 repository and can only be installed using pclinuxos2010beta2 or beta1.

It is crucial to specify what system you use to remove any ambiguities in replies.

I am using a fully updated version of 2009. When 2010 is released, I'll probably update.

you should always mention the version since you are using a system most people who give support no longer expect people to run.

if you do not want to install newer kernels that are in testing, then you will have to wait until you install 2010 before you can use vmware.

I also prefer VMWare, but currently I'm using VirtualBox from the repo's (for setup simplicity)...  I have found it quite easy to run my VM's from different install in VBox..  just use the Vbox media manager to "add" the existing vdi, then "create a new virtual machine", select the existing vdi for the hard disk image, and press start.
