that is happening for some time, 1 year ago if i remember correctly

the biggest concern is the quality of the driver

you can verify when a ati driver is released and check in the site when the linux version is released

this is a example for ati 5xxx series, see the dates

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=win7/windows-7-64bit

and linux

T6 : "some friends have told me recently that laptops with nvidia video card in it are failing drastically"

They should smoke OR drink, not both at the same time!  :D

Nvidia (still all the way here).

But ATI (now holding hands with AMD) has improved drastically re Linux support so ... bottom line could very wel be: "Up to you".

right now supposedly 100% probable that your nvidia will work in linux(supposedly) and 90% for ati

Alright, I'm late to the party, but just figured I'd weigh in briefly.  I've had success with both Nvidia and ATI cards, but my current main system has an ATI Radeon X1200 Series card.  The performance is fine, and hardware acceleration seems to work well.  And although it's been a while since I re-installed, I'm pretty sure it was auto-detected properly.

And with the help of aticonfig, I've got the desktop set up to span 2 monitors quite nicely.  (Now if only I could find a way to restart X when I reconnect to my external monitor after traveling without killing all my programs...).

So if someone is considering what to buy, I wouldn't let an ATI card turn you off a particular machine.

Thanks for the reply greg.frank aka evervigilant.  I ultimately purchased the nvidia gt260 in sli.  As always they work great, but its nice to know that the ati is a viable choice in Linux ;D

You're welcome.  I figured you'd have bought something by now, but I thought it might be worthwhile to mention here in case this comes up in someone's search results in the future.

[edit] Oh, and there's no need to quote my full handle - just 'greg' or 'gf' or 'evervigilant' or 'hey, dummie' or whatever is fine. [/edit]

Thanks for that,  you'd never guess how much trouble I've had not using someones full handle ;)

I just wanted to ring in on this subject... nVidia has long supported Linux. It supports full hardware acceleration even on much older cards. That's not the case with ATi. ATi's stance is that it supports relatively newer cards, but when cards get older, they're forced to use the open source driver. Now, I'm all for open source, and I think, in general, open source is good. However, I do understand why ATi would probably hold back some information so that it would not leak out to the competition and, therefore, the open source driver is doomed to non-parity with the closed source driver. It is my philosophy to support those that support Linux, and to support first and foremost, those that do a better job of support. Therefore, I buy nVidia. When I built my current machine, there were ATi cards that performed better for the money than my 275GTX card, but my money still goes to nVidia.

Hi ruel24 and thanks for the reply.  That has been my take for the last five or so years.  Nvidia has been good to support Linux and right now every computer at home and in the office is equiped with Nvidia stuff for that reason.  The only reason I thought to ask at all is because when purchasing a high dollar notebook where the graphics card cannot be changed and using the latest kde4 I wanted to make double sure that some changes I was not aware of had not taken place.

I don't know of a better place than here to find that out ;D

My laptop has ATI and has worked fine. I think it's really come a long way in the last while. I did however have to boot the live cd in failsafe, install then choose the driver in the control center, but other than that it works great. I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 Series in a HP Pavilion dv7-3165dx. This video card also worked in all other distros I tried but I usually had to enable the proprietary driver, Sabayon was the easiest to configure because in that one it was fully set up with ATI driver initially, didn't have to do anything at all. So it seems that Linux support for ATI video is fine, just might need to be set up by the user to some extent.

Hey .82, thanks for the reply.  Good to know that ATI has improved Linux support.  If enough linux people start using ATI on Linux maybe they will get on board with some new drivers and a new Catalyst Control Center for Linux?  One can only hope ;)
