It will depend on which version of PCLinuxOS you are using.
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

For the 2010 betas there are five versions of 2.6.32.10. You just use Synaptic to download and install any one of them. (The newly installed kernel will become your new default, but it won't overwrite or remove your old one: you can still boot from any previous kernel if you wish to.)

For 2009 there was a 2.6.32.2 in testing. (I don't know if it's available anymore on the most up-to-date mirrors.)

Can  I update to 2010 if needed?
Does 2010 have kde3 in it still?

Not yet, but very soon -- unless you want to be stuck in time.

Yes, but you'll have to reinstall. You might want to wait a few days for the stable version. You can probably retain some of the settings in your home directory.

Unfortunately not.

As blackbird rightly mentioned if you decide to go with the new 2010 version you will need to do a completely new install.

Tex has thus far released 2 beta's  and the final version will be out fairly soon so if you are going to change over to 2010 now would be a good time to back up all the data you may want to keep.

If you have a separate /Home partition you could keep that and "re-instate" things into the 2010 version as required.

The default kernel in 2010 is 2.6.32 (with - I think - 4 various flavours; a64 / bfs / lgc  / pae)

Note: I think it may still include a 2.6.31 kernel as well

Could I use a 2010 kernel in the 2009

I don't know how well the new kernels would work in a 2009 setup, if at all.

But note that the 2.6.32.2 kernel I mentioned before was built for a fully updated 2009 system, and at least on my 2009 install it works very well. (It's actually also a 2010 kernel: the package is called kernel-2.6.32.2-pclos5-1-1pclos2010.i586.rpm.)

I don't know how long it will be available once 2010 final is out, but I just checked a number of the repository mirrors and found it on every one of them except the main one (ibiblio).

(For Synaptic to find it you have to add "testing" to the Section(s) line of your chosen repository before you hit "Reload". And remember to remove "testing" when you're done.)

Thanks black bird for your help

When I updated the kernel last time I am sure it upgraded 2 files to get the 2.6.27 kernel
I think they were the  kernel and  kernel header files.
Do I need both of these 2.6.32.2-pclos5 kernel and  kernel header files for the 2.6.32.2-pclos5?
As only the   2.6.32.2-pclos5 kernel file was tagged .

Yes, you need both (or video drivers and modules that don't come with the kernel package won't be recompiled against the new kernel). But you shouldn't have to choose the header package expressly; you should get it as a dependency of the kernel -- if you install with Synaptic or apt-get.

Edit:
I should add that if you've installed a module as a dkms package, the parts of the package that have to be recompiled will be so automatically. In PCLinuxOS 2009 this will happen the next time you start your computer, and may take some time. (In 2010 you probably won't have to reboot.)

If your installed module doesn't come from a dkms package, you will have to reinstall it manually.

Thanks for your help

I had to install the kernel and the kernel development files
for some reason the kernel development file did not get tagged using synaptic
So as you suggested the nvidia drivers would not install
installed dkms -nvidia-current, X11-driver-video-nvidia-current and nvidia190.
Video would not start in the beginning due to a bad command in line 15 in xorg.conf.
When commented out using the nano editor it worked fine
 "nano /etc/X11/xorg.conf
#Dave    Option "AddARGBGLXVisuals" "True"  the same line later is fine

the tv overscan actually works now with the 8400gs card.

thanks for all of your help

hello thought i'd jump in.

Aa few of us want to work on home theater pc stuff in pclinuxos.

Been in it for years, and found pclinuxos while wading through the molasses of research.

I have some PCHDTV hd-3000 cards. they work under the mythtv dvb settings.

As I speak I am working on a pclinuxos box 2010 beta2 and will soon find oud out where to put the firmware of my card.
