(SOLVED) Alt+Tab doesn't cycle windows as it should
« on: March 24, 2010, 08:56:41 AM »

I gather from the help files in xfce4 that you can cycle through windows with the usual Alt+Tab keystroke.  I've checked the xfce4 forum and sure enough, that's what should happen. Trouble is - I can't. In the Window Manager section of my Settings Manager, no keystrokes are indicated at all. I've played around with the settings there without any luck. Is there something I'm missing, or is my install slightly screwed? Or is the PCLOS version different in some way?

Same here, on a 2009.2 kde,

besonian, what kind of installation are you referring to?

Here I really misses alt-tab. Are also looking for ctrl-esc for process info and ctrl-alt-esc for xkill. As sait it is a 2009.2 kde install with xfce de installed later. I expect there is a program or two that need to be installed, just haven't researched which.

I assume the 2010 xfce build have these working though. Haven't tried it yet but looking forward to install it :-)

Was just about to reinstall this veeery old install that is, by beating it up on purpuse I might add, fubar'ed in KDE4, but xfce handles things amazingly fine until the final iso's hits the street

MBanz - my install is a hybrid. It started out as PCLOS LXDE 2009.4. I was impressed with that and the lightweight DE principle. So I decided to try xfce4 and downloaded from Synaptic the task-xfce package plus the plugin package. Apart from this one blip, it all works very well - fast, efficient, attractive. But like you, I miss the Alt+Tab keystroke. But like I said, if you go to the XFCE website it's clear from that that Alt+Tab is indeed a feature of it. So why mine's not working I don't know. Except perhaps the hybrid is showing.  ;D

Three hours later - having written the above, I was a bit concerned at just how 'hybrid' my install was. I then discovered a thread about the XFCE iso, downloaded it, burned it and installed it on a spare machine. I haven't had chance yet to really give it a test, but I will hopefully tomorrow. So my above comments I'd like to hold in abeyance until I've done that. I guess I should have taken a more careful look around before posting.

besonian,

I've installed XFCE and LXDE on quite a few computers. XFCE does NOT have hardly any keyboard shortcuts installed (by default), but they are very easy to set up. I've done it on every XFCE installation I've done ... whether it's from the Phoenix installation Live CD, or from task-xfce.

I'm going to attempt to do this from memory, since I'm typing my reply from the 2010 Beta 2.

In the XFCE Settings Manager, open Window Manager.

Click on the "Keyboard" tab.

Double click the task you want to add a keyboard shortcut for (e.g., Close Window).

Press the keystroke combination you want to assign to that task (e.g., Alt + F4, together, for Close Window).

Hit "OK".

I hope this helps! It's never failed me.

Parnote - makes me feel a bit of a prat. It was that simple  ::) I'd got as far as getting that little window up umpteen times. But because I could see nowhere to type anything, it never even occurred to me to simply press the keystroke I wanted. How we get stuck in grooves. At least I do and I hope I'm not the only one  ;D Thank you. It's all working now.

besonian,

No need to feel like anything ... except happy to get it working!

I'm glad it worked and that you have things sorted out.
