« on: March 24, 2010, 03:16:47 AM »
running beta 2...kde seems little sluggish on older laptop...can someone recommend the best light desktop environment for pclos?  xfce, e-17 or lxde?

also, how would i add the environment through command line (or is there a better way)?

thanks.

Use Synaptic to install a second or third DE ..........  usually by choosing something like
task-<whatever DE>

You can then log into whichever DE you wish when booting.

just download the LXDE ISO and boot to it and see how it runs live..this you can do with all the light weight DE's

If you run a light desktop (lxde, e17, xfce) on top of a KDE4 base by installing different desktops through synaptic, is it still a bloated system?

not so much as bloated .. but it still is better as a clean install of said DE's ...well only my opinion  ;D

The only benefit I can see by installing a light desktop on top of a KDE4 base is that you can use KDE apps, but even then KDE apps should be able be run on a clean lxde, e17, xfce base.

What? .....  you would have me wipe my main KDE install to try an install of another DE?
...  or maybe - if I had the room - to dual or triple boot the various DEs?

No thank you!

It is of great benefit to me to be able to try out the various DEs on the one install.

It has nothing to do with installing "over" KDE.
The other DEs install alongside KDE.

regards.

I wouldn't suggest you do that. I have to upgrade several machines once the official PCLOS 2010 is released and some of the machines I will upgrade are a bit on the old side and lacking memory. A lightweight DE like lxde is ideal for these machines but on my main desktop pc I will consider 2010 KDE4 base running lxde.... decisions decisions  :) On the machines with only a maximum of 512mb of memory I will install 2010 lxde when it's released. There is also one laptop with only 256mb of memory and have yet to decide what to do with that. My thoughts are that a machine with only a maximum of 512mb will not be very speedy running lxde over a kde4 install.

Tex and the gang have made a series of superb versions, it is difficult to decide what to do. So much quality to choose from  :)

Yes ... try the Live CD's (ISO's) that are available. That is the best course of action. I only needed to try one -- the LXDE release. It is fast, responsive, has a 'clean-looking' design, and does all that I need. Try them all, however, just to make sure that you have not deprived yourself of anything.

I've done that and I also like the LXDE release. I noticed that it uses more resources than the previous LXDE release which isn't a problem for my own machine, but running LXDE on top of a KDE4 release uses even more resources. You can see I have covered all the bases here before committing myself  ::) I have enjoyed running KDE3.5 and it feels like an old pair of shoes, very comfortable. As mentioned in my previous posts on this thread, I will be upgrading several machines and the owners of some of these machines aren't computer savvy and will find all the new features and bling that comes with KDE4 too much to handle. LXDE will keep them within their comfort zone, and they won't have to splash out on upgrading their laptops.

"running beta 2...kde seems little sluggish on older laptop"

how old?(specs please)  are you using compiz or kde desktop effects?

xfce4 is a very good option, very nice and fast

lxde is another good option specially if you like old kde3, it is very similar to kde3

e17, i don't know if it is a good desktop for you, could be a bit too heavy in the graphics department, depending on your hardware specs

under certain circumstances you can use more lightweight desktops like fluxbox or icewm, really, really lightweight, 5 seconds to load or less

it depends on hardware specs and what you want from your desktop
