Did you get any information from the amixer commands?

amixer --help         will show what options are available.

It looks like you should be able to define the 'default' device using the   -D    option.

....  might be worth a try at least to see if the onboard speaker is mentioned in the amixer list

amixer -i     should show everything that is present.

If you load gnome alsamixer, can you set that to play your audio? If it works you can delete the volume control from the panel and add gnome alsamixer if you want.

OK ..will use this as an alternative solution .. not happy with it since I need to pop up the mixer every time I need to adjust the sound.. but at least it gives me sound out the internal speaker..

thanks old dude.. ;D

Scoundrel,

I have the same problem, the green loudspeaker icon is unresponsive.
I use Smplayer for cd playback and installed volti from the repo, put it into the launcher and it does allow slider adjustment.

The only problem is the icon shows in the launcher bar, but not in the panel when it is activated.
I am still playing with it, it can be a little jittery when changing the settings.

solved by using Volumeicon 0.2.1 ... and huge thanks to Melody for asking for it being added to our repos ...I'm now using it on all PCLOS versions except for KDE4
