Right click - Select Master Channel ??    Have I misunderstood?

You may need to open the mixer and  Settings - Configure Channels   to show you the optional channels

Hello,
Is the default volume control not an integral part of the LXDE desktop which does not have the facility for changing sound settings?
trustytrev.
If there's a harder way to do something I'll probably find it.

Hello,
      I think it is. :)
Do you mean the speaker in the pc that beeps when booting up,
trustytrev. or do you mean the output of the onboard sound of the motherboard?

I have had some discussions with Neal about playing audio cd's and from what I understand is in LXDE pcmanfm is not very friendly to audio.

I have been able to get Amarok to play audio files on an external USB hard drive with LXDE Beta 1 and 2 but not audio cd's.
From what Neal was saying is that this should improve with the next version of pcmanfm.

If you load gnome alsamixer, can you set that to play your audio? If it works you can delete the volume control from the panel and add gnome alsamixer if you want.

scoundrel,
In lxterminal, type
Code: [Select]
amixer
From the output, at about line 3, you should see your master channel as well as whether mono or not. I hope this info will give you some clue in what you need to change.

Hello,
I think most on-board sound sockets are software switched and are actually stereo sockets which can only be adjusted with the master slide. If you only have a one speaker connected to such a socket you can only adjust it  with the master slide.I would think the only way to adjust  a mono channel is to actually have a mono output socket.I don't think mono sockets are provided unless you are using some obscure sound output device.
You can adjust stereo channels independently in alsamixer by clicking on the lock at the master slide.A single speaker would only be using one channel or the other of a stereo socket. If you look at a mono connector and a stereo connector you can easily see the difference. Both will fit a stereo socket  Do you have speaker-test installed. If so you can run it while playing about with the settings in alsamixer.speaker-test -c2 -twav would show which channel is actually emitting the sound.

just to straighten up a few things... I have no problem playing anything so long as speakers are connected to the speaker output receptacle in back..which the volume slider is controlling...and sadly I have only one surround system < ---for my media box and one old stereo which grates the heck out of my neighbors when scoundrel rocks ;D

what I am wanting to do is shift the volume control and output to the on board speaker..

Hello,
It looks like it is the following.
" I don't think mono sockets are provided unless you are using some obscure sound output device."
It may be that the kernel you are now using has dropped capability for the hardware in question if you had it working before.
Perhaps you need to use an earlier kernel to regain the capability or customise the kernel you are using to include the necessary driver.
Are there any differences in drivers being use in the hardware section of PCC /sound configuration?

Could you use the AUMIX-GTK instead?

It is what I always use.
