ext4 +kde4+
« on: March 19, 2010, 04:28:14 AM »
Hi to all,
The following refers to beta 2.
Are all HDD capable of formatting to ext4.
I ask this because I formatted an 80GB sata2 drive with ext4 with the following partitions:
sda1  /  40GB
sda2 swap 4GB
sda3 /home 15GB
sda4 /mnt/data 15GB.
Ram = 2GB
The installation went well, and on rebooting I changed the dhcp to fixed address.
Did some upgrades, then rebooted.
The reboot time became so long some 10Mins. before the system got up. at which point I had no internet connection.
Also I could not open any files..PCC would not work..Firefox would not work...
Pushing the rest button I the did a reinstall using ext3 and since then I have had no problems.
Any thoughts??.

that is a bit strange ..and ext4 should work on all HD's ...

on a side note.. your / is a bit big ..20GB should suffice ..even if you decided to install the whole repo  ;D

Hi,
The problem does not exist on all computers.
I have beta2,ext4  running on a P2-350 and it has no problems at all, whereas the 3 core AMD has twice now locked up with no-responsive icons when installed with ext4, but not with ext3.
The other 2 Intel Machines I have, on one  I cannot install beta 1,2 on the other beta 1 will install but not beta 2
There is no common denominator to say why.
Thus the question about ext4! This problem does seem to machine related, as I install beta 2,ext4 on 2 different drives and they both locked up, but installing ext3 the system is fine, but I cannot see what relates to what.

i never create a /home or data partitions, never

all i do is create swap and /

swap become sort of useless after 1 gb of ram available on your system so give to it 4 gbs will only be useful if you do lots of remasterme/makelivecd tasks

afik, 2 or 3 are more than enough on your circumstances

the reboot time, what is doing the system on that moment?

can you see the verbose boot? what does it say it is doing?

it sounds like it is doing partition check
