K3b FORMATING when it should be ERASING??
« on: March 15, 2010, 09:45:19 AM »
Hi

I have started having a problem with K3b >:(.
Am wondering if this problem is Perl related problem similar to the posting I did on 12 March ( http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,69281.0.html ).

The K3b problem is when i try to burn ISO's with new disks or ones that I have used for many months i get this message pop up "Found DVD-RW sequential media in ( drive details ) Should it be formated?". If i click no the disk is ejected and the burn process stops. If i click yes the disk spins for a minute or two showing the formatting screen, then another message pops up, "Erasing Failed", but the disk as been erased, it then spits the disk out, sucks it back in and starts to write to disk But very slow, and the device buffer fluctuates between 80% and 84% where as it was usually at 99%.
K3b is trying to format when it should be erasing, and just to check this out I went into Settings,Advanced Settings and checked the box Automatically erase CD-RW's and DVD-RW's, Then tried burning a ISO and as soon as the disk is detected by K3b it starts to attempt to format the disk.

Have been experimenting with Brasero but it doesn't recognise my DVD-RW so it looks like it will only burn DVD+RW disks. Is correct?

Any ideas please, especially from a  Perl mastermind  ;D
Thanks in anticipation

CD-RW get erased, DVD-RW get formatted, DVD+RW just get overwritten, without need for reformatting. In fact reformatting DVD+RW is possible, but can lead to damaging the disk, and will definitely shorten their usable life if done often.

K3B has a separate Format/Erase rewritable disk option that should be used first, before trying to write to DVD-RW. That way it doesn't have to do the process on the fly, during the write process.

Personally I use only DVD+RW and have no problems with K3B.

added to that, sometimes when you use a dvd or dc(rewritables) in one burning app and then in another, sometimes you can find weird errors, specially when using nero and then k3b

as old pollack said if you don't need to format don't do it but the situation i mentioned makes it required, not always but can happen

"If i click yes the disk spins for a minute or two showing the formatting screen, then another message pops up, "Erasing Failed", but the disk as been erased,"

i believe it is a error in k3b, i have experienced it by myself, if you format/erase the disc before the process you won't see the error

there are some advantages/disadvantages(not that clear information) between both types of media but dvd+rw is predominant now

i haven't had a single one or seen one(dvd-rw) so can't say nothing about it, all i can get is dvd+rw at very cheap prices

Hi
Thank for the info OP but Apart from the initial formatting of a new DVD-RW I have never had to reformat these disks before, K3b as always erased them never formatted.
