KDE 4.4.1 SC Device Notifier (v1.0 discussed here) run-through. I have NOT made any changes to the setting of Device Notifier v1.0 (is still configured as it was delivered). There are a wealth of options available, but I'll tell you how this works unmodified before I tell you how to modify it.
For me, in my situation, I prefer to have Device Notifier in the taskbar, but I presently have Device Notifier in 2 locations (so I can see how the other half lives): on the desktop and installed in the taskbar.
I can insert the USB flash disk, the Device notifier installed in the taskbar will "popup", the widget on the desktop will change from blank to add an entry.
The title of both Device Notifiers now says "Devices recently plugged in". It does not say the devices were mounted.
In the device Notifier, there are 2 areas of this first entry (and for now it is the only entry) that do something for us: 2 squares - a square on the left, a square on the right.
In my situation, the USB Flash drive is NOT opened in any manner so the safely remove feature is not offered.
At this point, I am in safely remove mode. I can unplug the USB Flash drive.
When I remove the USB Flash drive, the Device notifier clears the device from the list.
I insert the USB flash disk. Wait until I get the pop-up from taskbar and/or it is listed in the desktop.
If I click on the middle of the entry for this USB Flash drive that is displayed in the Device Notifier, nothing happens, I believe this is as expected.
If I double click in the middle, again, nothing happens. Again, I believe this is as expected.
Next, I hover the mouse pointer over the entry in Device Notifier. I see 2 boxes.
If I click on the entry, tooltips will be enabled (I believe that NEEDING this mouse click to activate tooltips is possibly a bug.... for now, lets assume click is needed)
If I hover the mouse pointer over the 2 boxes, I see the following tooltips:
Right box says "Click to access this device from other applications."
Left box says: "The device is plugged in, but not mounted for access yet."
Of interest here: (possibly this is a bug) you can click on the left box, and a list of actions is offered, similar to the KDE 3.X actions list when the screen pop-up arrived: "Download Photos with ..." etcetera.
If I click on the right side box for this entry, the device gets "mounted". The square on the left changes from a slash in the square (slash means not, so this means not mounted) to a representation of a USB A male plug.
After clicking the square on the right, the square on the right has now changed to a circle, in the circle is a triangle (or arrow) above a bar.
The left square now shows a male USB type A plug.
In my instance, once the USB Flash drive is mounted, I get a bar graph showing me how much space is used - great idea!
At this point, I can click on the left icon to do what I want from there, or, I can just leave it mounted, go into an application and open files on the USB Flash drive or save files to the USB Flash drive.
When I am done using the USB Flash drive, Device Notifier is one location where I can execute the "Safely Remove" function.
I can also "Safely Remove" in Dolphin - I need to right click the places entry for this device so I can get to the 'Safely Remove' function.
One important point here is that if Dolphin is open and reading a directory on the USB Flash drive, executing a "Safely Remove" when you are in the Device Notifier is going to fail. Close all files tand folders that are opened, then "Safely Remove". Same as it ever was.
That is pretty much everything I needed to explain. Just right click on the Device Notifier window to bring up the settings menu, and reconfigure the Device Notifier beyond all compare.
