Typeing German Charachters on US keyboard.
« on: March 18, 2010, 04:37:04 PM »
Hi,
I was wondering if somwone could please help me on this.
I listen to a lot of German alternative music and I like to rip all of my music to FLAC to listen to from my hard drive.
Thing is I would like to be able to type the names of artists and songs correctly.
How do I do this on a US keyboard?
Thanks.

Hi,

you can add a second keyboard-layout for German and then switch between the two:
Configure Your Desktop (KDE control center) -> Personal -> Regional & Language -> Keyboard Layout  (or from a terminal and in KDE4: kcmshell4 keyboard_layout)
then on the right panel select Enable keyboard layouts and from the list below that add the German keyboard to the Active layouts, then click Apply and you should then see a flag sign for the keyboard layout in the panel at the bottom right of your desktop. Click that flag to switch between the keyboard layouts. To find out which key matches which letter on a German keyboard check here.
good luck,
-p.

If you only need diacritical characters in single words or names, simply use Kcharselect to insert them. If you have to type longer phrases, do as Pinoc recommended.
