When i must take smart to configuration, for what i need kpackagekit, then smart makes this job better

I am confused by the present arrangement of the packages.
It is my understanding that packagekit itself depends on a backend like APT or Smart.
This dependency does not appear to be present .... I may be very wrong!
Kpackagekit, which I understood to be a front end to packagekit, has Smart as a dependency.
Generally I would have thought that packagekit would be compiled to use one backend - apt or smart maybe - and that the front ends (Kpackagekit) would not have a dependency on smart or apt.
Of course I may be misunderstanding how all these things are supposed to go together ....
I also tried to install gnome-packagekit but that won't install because there is a dependency that is not available. I will look to an update which might fix that.
