I see Gnome, LXDE...but, No MiniMe2010 beta?
« on: March 17, 2010, 06:28:05 PM »
I know theres someone who's gonna still pop in with "when its ready". But, Im still compelled to ask, "whats the news on MiniMe2010?". So far I've seen the Gnome version and its minimal counterpart pop up in beta form. As well as many other variants.

But, shockingly no MiniMe on that list of recent betas. So, please bear with me on this before lighting the torches and chasing me out of town with pitchforks. Its just a simple question that can do without any hostility or snide remarks. ;)

If no one can answer. Maybe I could be pointed out to a Twitter page for it?

there is no minime at the moment ...

Aaaaw man :-\

Well, thanks for responding Sproggy. I was just really curious as I been patiently waiting...well, waiting as patiently as possible ;D. As I prefer MiniMe over the full install for various reasons.

Minime is a very tough cookie to crack, but it can be cracked.  Why don't we wait for final to be released, and then a few of us can work on it, and compare notes?

I'm still learning the ropes with e17, and hopefully can get started on Minime 2010 before taking off cross country.  Once I leave on April 1st, I'll mostly be outta pocket and on the road.

Come onnnnnnnn final... let's go!!

Well then, you can either wait on me (after 24 April), or see what the other devs are doing.  LOL   ;D ;D

I expect a KDE4 minime isn't going to be so 'mini'. We shall see!

Wow, such a large surge of folks popped in!

Hey guys, I been hammering this idea around in my head. But, I feel uneasy bringing it up as I hate to bring upon heavy artillery fire. But I did already bring it up to Sproggy. but, I figured maybe kick it around to see what you guys of the dev group think.

Has anyone ever considered an installation option in the full CD that allows the user 2 choices?

1) Full Install: The usual installation that loads up everything. A good option for a machine w/o internet. But, a longer installation time.

2) Core Install: Installs the basic necessities and DE. Users still has to use Synaptic to get everything he/she needs. But, it still cuts out all the excess stuff more advanced users may not desire. as well as a faster install.

Perhaps even a 3rd option...

3) Pro Install: As the name suggest. Its meant more for users that know everything they want right off the CD. Thus letting them pick each thing. This could make for a faster install of only the exact items the user wants. This option may even just be a better alternative to #2.

I remember Mandriva was like that. Not sure about now. Haven't touched it in 5yrs. But to be frank. Even though I seen it in other distros. It just never WORKED. As I'd always get slammed with a full install each time.

But, this is just a ball Im tossing in to see how it gets kicked around. ;D

Straight at your head i would imagine! ;D

It sounds like a good idea, until you stop to think just how much work and co-ordination it would need bearing in mind
PCLos is a rolling distro.

I think the devs  and Tex deserve a break every now and then, just imagine the workload if they had to keep it all synced together!

I have seen the odd distro that had this feature, cannot remember what or when, but i somehow doubt they were the rolling kind.
Not that i have any experience of compiling mind, (my only claim is that i manage to break things) so perhaps the gang will take a different view.

I'd hope not. As I kinda value this place for being alot more level-headed than most other forums I've dealt with ;)

Well, I would imagine this shouldn't hurt it's "rolling distro" setup. As you're installing the same thing. Just adjusting the "amount" of whats installed.

But, Im amazed this grabbed a few folks attention. Well, I already speculated the newer MiniMe wouldn't be very small. Heck, '09 was bigger than the previous one as well. So, it was to be expected that 2010's wouldn't spare the space either. But yet being that it IS indeed getting bigger. Maybe a setup close to what I was suggesting might be of use?

Keep in mind its only a mere suggestion. Nothing more as I too feel Tex, Sproggy, Linxuxera & the others run an awesome operation here. So, Im not looking to step on any toes. But the fact that I love this OS and this community is what would compel any user to toss a bit of wood on the ol' pit to see what it sparks up. ;D

Well I  might do it for a Klondike bar.  :P

Why did that all of a sudden make me think about "Scooby Doo"? Hmm, would Tex do it for 6 Klondike bars? Perhaps the Triple chocolate ones? ;) heheh

Yes indeedy.. KDE isn't going to make it easy for us in the least on Minime.  How about OpenBox like Crunchbang has?  naw, then it wouldn't be Minime but OpenMe...  Kinda like a present.   ;D ;D

What about of minimalist distro without X? It will be useful also, as router, server or rescue cd, for example.
