My PCLinuxOS seams to have a lot of problems.

Hello PCLOS forums, I am newish to linux, not going smoothly as I am haveing alot of problems with my PCLinuxOS 2009.1 on my AsusEEE PC 701.
I shall number them to make replying with sugestion to fix each problem easier.

1) My updates from synaptic don't seem to work properly, when I boot up I see a lot mesages saying either "not installed - newer version exists on kernal" or "instalation failed - skipping". PCLinuxOS 2010 pops up too, but this hapened before the beta was even released! Clicking repair does nothing either.

2) I tried to install KDE 4, display is the same and there seems to be no option to set it to KDE 4 that I can find.

3) WINE  I have no clue how to set this up. All I want to do is get it to recognise my external DVD multi drive so I can install and play Diablo II - Lord Of Destruction.

4) Realtime Kernal for low latancey so I can use my EEE pc  as a drum machine. Is there one?

5) Latest problem, I can nolonger write to my external HDD. I don't even get a very descriptive error mesage it just says "Could not make folder /mnt/windows/Musik/New Folder." this happens when I try to make new folders and whenever I try to copy files from the SDD to the external HDD. (the error mesages chage depending on what I name the folder or files)
Is this something about where it is mounted? Where should I set both of my external drives to be mounted? They are formated to FAT32 so i can play the music on them when I visit my fiends. Not that this works as it seems Vista and Windows 7 don't recognise FAT32, only NTFS :duh:

6) how do I input germanic characters such as the dupple S and umlorts etc? I listen to alot of german alternative music, and I'd like to be able to name and tag the songs correctly.

7) ASUS EEE PC blue function keys, how do I get them to work? Shutdown and restart also don't work propperly.

BTW I do not have an internet connection for my pc, I am on here on my smartphone, and update at internet cafes.

Huh, you wrote many problems in one post. For the start, open Konsole and copy/paste:

Sorry about that. I posted this before I read all the rules.
I am afraid that copy, paste would be impossible as I have no internet connection for my pc just my smartphone. Which is how I am on the forum now.
I did try formating that long list of questions, adding numbers and the like so that any answers could just start with the number so everyone would know what is what.
I will try what you said and and will retype if it is not too long.

i am afraid you have caught us at a bad time. pclinuxos2009 and prior are not widely used and support maybe hard to find while the current and future version is at a beta1 stage.

you can get the beta version here: http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,68977.0.html

it is more stable than typical betas and you will get more help if you run this version. Be advised that you will have to reinstall the final version when it comes out if you install this beta version.

Current advice is to forget about updating old PCLinuxOS versions

Wait for 2010 full release or practice now with the Beta release (information on the front page of this site).

Then do a clean install again when the full release comes out.

Kind of, it is an ASUS EEE PC 701 with an 8GB SDD for root, 2GB, Non MIDI soundcard and a 16GB SDHC card for home.
The reason I have this is the reason I don't have my own internet connection, it is all I can afford.

anyways i'll try to answer few..

After going through this post I undersatnd you dont have a Internet Connection, which method did you use to update trough Synaptic

If you install KDE4 by default it boots into KDE4, If not during logon click on session select KDE, also got to your home folder "cd ~" without quotes and try "ls -a". If .kde4 folder is not listed then you dont have kde4

In Konsole window type "winecfg", this will open the winec configuration window, go to drives here you will see your external drives listed if not add. Note: here the devices mount points are mapped windows like drives for eg in my case CDROM is mapped to D: like thie    "D:     /mnt/cdrom"

As far as I know these specail keys are desiged to do specific operation only in the OS which came with PC, for different OS you might need to tweak settings to assign an operation to these special keys.

These steps might be usefull... At the saem time try to play with PCLOS beta2, that one is smooth as silk...

You are right about 2009.1 is old didn't they release 2009.2.

Hey to each his own and after the fun of coming from 2007 to 2009 i feel for the gentleman's predicament .

KDE4 is still in BETA stage. Beta from the Greek word Betta meaning absolutely positively Not for the faint of heart or  noobs 


my suggestion would be the following
If you can afford to and if its not too much trouble  get a the newer version of 2009 (i.e. 2009.2 or LXDE)
then point your repo from belnet.  That repo has issues to another repo 
also there is a thread concerning Youcantoo frozen repo which is a good way to update your system with lesser chance of borking it

this helped me alot when i had to reinstall after i added a new video card.

Thanks for that advice. I'v upgraded to a clean install of the 2010BETA1.
All the eeePC function keys work out of the box.
The hard drive issue is still there. I started a new thread for that in the Netbook Hardware section of the Forum, it has details.

As for how I update, I do it at internet cafes that are slow and overpriced.
It cost me thirty dollars just to download the 2010beta1 iso. Then I get home, check the twitter feed on my phone and I find out that the beta2 iso was just uploaded! Agggh!
 Thanks for the wine tip, I don't have wine anymore due to the clean install, I am waiting untill my fiend has time of from his IT course so I can finally get new software, play diablo II and get wasted. By which time I suspect that the final iso will be available.

there is a new pclinuxos coming as soon as the testing is done and dusted.  it pays to read the announcements now and again to know when the repo is frozen on your current install.

there are no more updates for 2009.  the repos are now populated with packages for 2010, which now uses kde4.  be prepared for a complete reinstall with the new iso.
