Is Muti Monitor supported
« on: March 16, 2010, 07:27:18 PM »
OK this is kinda part software to but basically I am wondering if PClin will know what to do with a muti monitor GPU Graphics card?

something like

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4387006&csid=ITD&body=MAIN#detailspecs

or

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=4311513&CatId=3669

I am wondering if the features card like this offer can really be taken advantage of on Linux? From what I have read browsing muti monitor support on Linux is ify, and to be honest I have never got it to work right but have not tried for a bit.

My plan is to have

Monitor/out put 01: be my 2010 PClin
Monitor/out put 02: be an extra desk top or extended space and running a full screen VM for when I am running other OS in VM via virtual box
Monitor/out put 03: be an extra desk top or extended space for running full scream apps I want visibal all the time and I just drag em over
Monitor/out put 04: A duplicate of which ever other monitor I choose

Can this be done? are these the best cards to do something like this?

I kinda need to do it all through one card as the motherboard and case I plan to use only has 7 X PCI-e and this card will Block 2 slots and need the other 5 for other cards.

Hope someone can help. I would rather build this Sytem with 2010 as its Primary OS vs W7

Man I hope you give us chapter and verse on this setup when it is up and running.

It sounds awesome!

It is some years since I did a dual monitor setup on PCLOS.
It took a little digging to get the info but the setup was simple enough once the info was available.

I really look forward to seeing some posts on this subject.

good luck with the project.

regards.

there is a setup in KCC that offers a module for a single desktop spread across multiple monitors

how dose it spit it. For instance if I make the app full screen::

would it fill the monitor
or the desktop/all the monitor(s)

When I switch desk tops: do the secondary screams from the spit desktop keep showing?

If I ever get it built I will. I have a few parts to track down. I am having trouble finding a 2 CPU mother board that supports 1333MHz - 1600MHz DDR3 ram, and has 7 PCI-e slots with at least 1 or 2 16X slots. the closeted I  have found is this one https://www.eio.com/p-18998-supermicro-mbd-x8dth-6f-o-dual-lga-1366-intel-5520-extended-atx-server-motherboard.aspx

but those are all 8X in 16x slots ??? >:(

And it is missing some ports I would want.

But all of that is another post first things first I want to make sure I can set up the monitors like I want and take advantage of the high end cards properly. Then move on to best 8 core board and reconfiguring for the 24-48GB or ram.

I'm interested in having a monitor/kb/mouse in every room in my house all being driven by  single PC. Apparently Sandy Bridge ( 201?) will drive 4 displays, and I think it was VIA that had something that could drive 8 displays. There's also the Zero Client concept from HP and other vendors. And maybe Light Peak to connect all this?

No matter what the solution at the end of the day it always seems to be 2011 before something like this is really feasible.

More along the zero client line.. Looks like my dream of a computer in every room will be a practical reality soon.

"OK this is kinda part software to but basically I am wondering if PClin will know what to do with a muti monitor GPU Graphics card?"

i remember a old post of a pclinux user reporting 24" or 27"(can't remember) monitors working in a nvidia video card

kde4 can recognize multiple monitors but sometimes all is done by the driver

afik it works similar to any multiple monitor setup in windows, you set where each monitor is and what will be showe there

about full screen, it depends on the resolution and the app used

that video card is appropriate to graphics design, for video editing afik it is a 100% waste of time

if you want to do a render farm most apps will use the cpu only, the most popular apps doing 3d modeling, 3d studio max is just doing the first steps towards gpu processing

a video card like that is a dream for some autocad designers and some gamers that know how to deal with the pros and cons of a workstation video card

That was why I was asking no point in wasting $1500-3000 on a really nice card like that If Linux is just going to use the CPU instead of the GPU. Better off to buy a 1024-1280MB gaming card that handles HD resolution and save the money or spend it on things like more RAM.

That was why I put it in hardware though every thing in my project kinda belongs in both ;)

"That was why I was asking no point in wasting $1500-3000"

1500?

http://www.pricewatch.com/video_cards/

i was talking about windows, i have set some basic rendering farms, the apps mentioned the information i shared

i don't know any information about use gpu and cpu to render 3d to this date

maybe blender some day will do it, it is one of the most powerful multiplatform 3d generator apps

if you still want the EVGA mainboard put two nvidia or ati cards in sli or crossfire, you will get similar to better performance with a third of less of the price, some very cheap video cards capable to do very high framerates in gaming and in hd rendering in 2560x1600 for less than $200

this solution depends on how linux work with more than one video card in sli/crossfire

also you could consider a dual gpu video card, nvidia and ati both have solutions, i like more ati but nvidia tends to work better on linux but this is a little more expensive

what video card you install depends on what you are going to do

video intensive tasks, any decent ati or nvidia from 2008/9 to date will handle 2 or 3 hd videos simultaneously(lots of cpu required but you will have some of those)

if you are going to do lots of 3d modeling, you need maximum power and there is where the quadra or the ati solution comes to help but if you are going to do basic autocad or similar sometimes a integrated intel video card will be enough  ;D
