no sound in browser
« on: March 16, 2010, 12:37:08 AM »
I have a hp laptop that I have been running pclos for some time now. I just updated for the first time in months using Synaptic and lost my sound in both Opera and Firefox. Shoutcast radio still works fine, just the browsers are silent. Adobe flash seems to be current. Anyone else have a similar situation? Thanks!

a friend of mine that is running pclos 09.1 kde3.5, since it came out, updated yesterday for the first time and also lost sound on browsers only. At first it was no sound at all, then after setting up for legacy sound card instead of the trident driver, through the utilities and sound conf, all but the browsers have sound now.
(not on laptop, but is only posting I found of this problem)

I wonder if the two of these have something in common, as I originally had no sound at all until reconfigured, then only no sound on all browswers...FF, Chromium, Konq

I did a fresh install of 2010 and ended up with this issue. Fairly simple fix but would be nice if was done automatically at install.

Make sure that you shut down your mixer first then try in a console as root using the alsaconf command.

Got that tip from this thread http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,70759.0.html and now I have sound in web browsers :). Thanks CJ for that tip!

It seems that quite a few (many?) are having audio issues with 2010. I don't have audio anywhere since I installed 2010 on a Samsung Q1 Tablet PC. I wish you luck.

My 2010 installation sound issue was fixed by removing pci sound card, as onboard works better with 2010 making it sound nice now.
If you can't do this for some reason this link may help. I have another friends pc to try this on. For some reason the thread didn't come up in my search results, but pointed out by Tex upon replying to another sound
issue thread. Hope it helps, I'll be trying it out a bit later when I pick up my friends pc.

Sound is missing in my browser too. Just installed PCLinuxOS KDE and fully updated it. Haven't changed any settings whatsoever...

System sounds are ok, i can play mp3:s also. Oh, no sound in my avi-files.

I did the troubleshooting, out came these

Is there something wrong? Any other ideas?

EDIT: Well, no laptop here, but the problem is the same, so...

I had the same problem with onboard nvidia sound. I had system sounds ok and amorak could play mp3 but had no video sound or browser sounds.

I checked /etc/modprobe.conf as per Texstars tip in the below link and found no sound card alias so added the 3 lines listed, rebooted to be sure and all works fine now.
