DNS issues (SOLVED)
« on: March 13, 2010, 09:33:08 AM »
I seem to be having DNS issues. Sometimes a regular site won't load quickly or fully. However, if I google the site and click the google link, it serves the page instantly and completely. In PCC>network, I clicked Configure DNS. It told me localhost was not a Fully Qualified Domain Name.

I searched the forum for Fully Qualified Domain Name and got three results. This one

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,68235.0.html

was the most helpful. I tried editing the /etc/... file mentioned as root in konsole. I'm pretty gui-centric due to laziness and noobiness, so working in konsole eventually got me to "bash no such command or file name" when I tried to open the conf file itself for editing.  When I tried to get at this file in konqueror, it wouldn't let me open the locked root file and said, "Medium not found, could not mount."

Do I need to log on as root to edit this file?  Am I even on the right track using the above post?  Is there a gui way to edit this file, perhaps in network configuration?

I am tremendously appreciative of the fact that those who help me are volunteering their valuable time and valuable expertise. I have rarely encountered a forum so willing to help.

go to "pcc -> network and internet -> set up new network interface" go on to configure your network and you will see a field to set a "hostname". Fill up the field, complete the process, log out and log back and the new name will take effect.

you can check by opening a terminal and look at the computer name.It should be the name you specified above

Hi denoobifyme

Have you considered using OpenDNS - this allows you to use their DNS server and its a FREE Service

You can set it up via the PCC control centre > Network and Internet > Network Centre > Configure (you may need to click on the small arrow next to your active network to see the configure button ) > Untick "Get DNS Servers from DHCP and enter the following numbers

Preferred DNS server address is: 208.67.222.222  (This is Server 1 in the PCC > Network area)
Alternate DNS server address is: 208.67.220.220  (This is Server 2 in the PCC > Network area)

Go to their web site for more info: http://www.opendns.com/

You don't need to register but if you do it gives you access to a "Dashboatrd" whereby you can setup Web Content Filtering etc; It also gives you usage stats for varying periods (not sure how large a period it covers) and other stuff. Or you can sign up to a paying account but that is probably overkill for most of us.

Thanks to muungwana and menotu for informative replies. I have entered opendns IA's as DNS severs on both Eth0 and Ath0 configuratios. That should help. I do not know what a Qualifed Domain Name looks like so I was unable to enter when when told to do so. If this solves the problem (which is only intermittent), I'll mark it so. Too bad Picard never said mark it so.

A FQDN takes the format such as

myhost.example.com
testbox.localhost.localdomain

Thanks for the template, YouCanToo. I'm still such a noob that I can't translate it to what my actual qualified thingie would be. I don't know what my local host and local domains are. So I have to say NoICant. (smile) the openDNS thing seems to be working, since the intermittent problem hasn't reoccurred. I really appreciate the three of you taking the time and effort to share your helpful info.

I normally give my system a name for example "Laptop". Since I do not have a domain name for my local network, I use localhost.localdomain so the fQDM would become laptop.localhost.localdomain
On my webserver I have the domain name "pclosusers.com" and my system is called "penguin"  The FQDN is penguin.pclosusers.com
Hope that shines some light on the issue.
