My Umax Vista S12 SCSI scanner is present but SANE no worky?

I installed ver 10 beta as a dual boot without a hitch but I'm a bit clueless & lost as to why SANE says it'll support my SCSI Umax scanner & the OS finds it but SANE no worky. Works fine in Windoze.
Is Kooka still supported? Synaptic doesn't find its RPM.
I've never run a scanner under Linux so any help would be most appreciated.  

I ran these terminal commands based on advice given in another thread.

found SCSI scanner "UMAX UMAX S-12 V2.1" at /dev/sg3

[root@localhost ~]# scanimage -L
device `umax:/dev/sg3' is a UMAX     UMAX S-12        flatbed scanner

When I had a Umax 1220S I had to go into the /etc/sane.d/epson.conf file and add the device ID and the mfg ID numbers before sane would work properly. Perhaps that is what is needed in your case here also.

Where is a good place to look for these "device ID and the mfg ID" #'s?

Is this something that's printed on the scanner chassis somewhere?

I found this: "4680 UMAX Computer Corp" on the web, but nothing for the S12 scanner.

It has been a long long time ago and I don't remember just what command I ran to find it. The information is on the systems, not the on the scanner itself.

I just decided to put a fresh install of XFCE on this old machine and just as a lark when the Control Center scanner setup asked if I wanted to install the SANE package I let it install right there instead of using Synaptic.
I don't know if that makes any difference, or if SANE just decided to start supporting SCSI scanners, but IT'S WORKING NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!   
The interface is pretty spiffy too, I'm impressed!!!
