Is it because 2010 is still Beta?
« on: March 14, 2010, 06:12:40 PM »
I dont know if this belongs here or in software discussion..

First off love most of 2010 beta.

But I am noticing the deeper I dive the more I find missing.
  • things like shortcuts just arnnt there in the settings
compiz affects that have been there forever are now missing by almost half of them like they don't exist.
    and so on

Are they just not in the beta, or is it because they wont be in 2010?

I am just wondering how much of this is they were not loaded because it is a beta and how much is things are changing?

Dose any one know if these finishing touches are on the way or gone for good? I know 2010 is a work in progress just wondering if these things are likely to return or not?

Compiz was upgraded from 0.7x to 0.8x so I suspect their developers probably changed the code or not. I never used Compiz very much other than to show off the cube from time to time to impress my Winders friends. There are two ways to use 3D effects in KDE 4. One is to use PCC and switch to 3D desktop which uses Compiz Fusion etc and the other way is to use KDE kwin 3D effects which are activated on the KDE system settings. The KDE system settings have less features than Compiz Fusion.

Did some more diging it turns out all of those are part of the compiz-main pac. I installed "compiz-fusion-plugin-main" and most of the ones and some more are part of the extra pack / "compiz-fusion-plugin-extra" in the repo.

Just a suggestion, but maybe both of these should be installed by default like compiz is in the final 2010 release as most of them are darn useful. And that way 2010 will have the same Compiz options as former PCLinux distros out of the box, or after first update.

I know both these pacs are technically extras but one of the things I always loved about PClinux is it tends to install all the related pacs for installed pacs.

I respectfully disagree, and I hope they are not installed by default.

However, if there is a minime coming, then by all means, install them by default on the full CD, but leave them off minime.
If there is no minime, then I still prefer not to see it.

Just my opinion.

Ya agree they should not be on a MINIME.

My assumption is that 2010 at least the one we are testing now is meant to replace 2009.2 KDE, not KDE Minime.

And I think it is great for that. My logic behind including them in the build by default is most wont know to go look for those 2 pacs and I have never had to add extra pacs in PCLin to get full use of a pac so forgot my self.

All of this stuff is a balancing act.

But I think for PClin full to stay as welcoming to new Linux users as it has been in the past including these for the full non minime build it is a must. I know alot of people do not use it. But if you care about useful eye candy and have a system than can run them they are just fun. I can not count how many people I have turned on the PClinux because they looked over at my screen and saw some of the animations or other eye-candy that is part of these pacs.

Please do not put this on the default install, particularly as it sounds as though the LiveCD is already rather full.

It might be appropriate, however, for PCC to recommend downloading the OPs packages if someone chooses to enable Compiz via PCC.

Sounds like a good idea actually.

I was thinking it should be added when you do the first check for update, but adding if you enable compiz is even better, as will only be added to people who use/enable the feature. And that solution sounds right in line with the ease and simplicity that PClinux has come to be known for.

I think your PCC solution is the perfect one.

Did you say MiniME Xenaflux, can't wait to get the 2010 version.  ;D
Newbi462 I am a fan of compiz too, and maybe one day there will be more plugins like the ones you used on kde3.5.
Some ways kde4 is a step forward and should be applauded, but it has alot to live up up to after compiz fusion,  ;)
