Networking PCLinuxOS and Windows Vista/7.
« on: March 14, 2010, 04:07:24 PM »
Hello guys,
I have a bit of a novice question, I tried search but it has turned up nothing.
How do I browse, copy files on my fiends windoze maschine from my PCLOS computer? I have heard of samba, is this a program that helps with talking between windoze and GNU-linux?
I would really love to learn how to do that.
Could someone please give me some tips/links?

Surprised no one has jumped in.

FYI I am talking from my 2010 beta1 to windows machine for printer, and can access files.
At this moment, I can't help, but the setup is not really hard. Just be sure to know the name of your windows network. usually the default is 'workgroup' but i always rename mine.

Although I can use the printer etc. The windows machine doesn't see the Linux boxes. Before the forum purge, there was a good writeup here on setting up samba, windows etc.
I never saved it to a file unfortunately, although I know I printed it out one time.

Someone will jump in I'm sure.. good luck :)

http://www.pclinuxos.com/wiki/index.php/Samba_Setup

thats a neat tutorial.

Before you follow the tutorial, open synaptic and install samba-server and samba-client and then go to pcc services section and startup samba if it is not running.

you will need samba-server for other computers on the network to see shared resources on your computer and you will need samba-client to see shared resources from other computers on the network

i find "smb4k" to be an excellent program to look and mount remote shares on the local file system.

Thanks guys, I use PCLOS 2009 at the moment, I may go into town and download the 2010Beta at a netcafe, looks like I'll have to buy five hours access.
Internet in my country is rather slow.

I will look over those tutorials, let you know how I go.
