Rolling distro?
« on: March 13, 2010, 10:13:59 AM »
Hi...

Deciding today on PCLOS or Sidux.  Is PCLOS a rolling distro like Sidux?    Any other input on advantages/disadvantages would be appreciated.  The rolling distro aspect is something I want right now.

Thanks.

some distros requires a reinstallation on every release. A rolling distro does not.

Since pclinuxos is a rolling distro, you can install once and keep on updating for years and years to be upto date. In a rolling distros, releases are only for people who are new to the distro and not for those who already have a running system.

2010 will require a reinstallation and this is an exception rather than a rule. Some of us last installed pclinuxos somewhere in 2007 and we have been updating for years. With the reinstall of 2010, we hopefully will be back on track and there will be no need to reinstall for years to come.

So....

Why is 2010 release a must re-install?

Is it possible to just do the traditional apt-get dist-upgrade when this is out or is the live iso install better?

Why is 2010 release a must re-install?

it is a required install because people were starting to get impatient and an upgrade path would have required months of preparation and manual user intervention required was above acceptable limit.

not sure what you are asking here. If you are using pclinuxos2007 or pclinuxos2009, then you will have to reinstall pclinuxos2010 because "apt-get dist-upgrade" will not work.

If you have pclinuxos2010(currently at beta1) installed, you can update your system either through synaptic or with "apt-get update" followed by "apt-get dist-upgrade". Be advised that this distro does not use "apt-get upgrade" and the use of this command will sooner or later bork your install.

the live cd is currently the one way to install pclinuxos

are you saying that pclos beta 1 can be used as a permanent install ??

That is not recommended.  It can be updated, but when final comes out you will need to do a fresh install of that, to avoid any future problems.

I posted the before so I will post it again. The original plan was to upgrade 2009 to 2010 but too much manual intervention was required because we updated xorg server, compiz, fglrx/nvidia drivers, KDE 4, initscripts, hal, dbus, firmware and much much more. It would be easier for the end user to just install from a new CD.

Ok....
so, if I install 2010 beta today I still have to do a fresh install of iso release when final is out?

I can't install 2010 beta today do apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade from a beta install when the final is released?

Thanks again.
