Error 15
« on: March 11, 2010, 08:03:16 PM »
I installed PClinuxOS on an old laptop and it is working great.  God brave enough to install it on a nice but old desk top.  Installation went just like the laptop with the exception of the Error 15 message at startup.  Can this be salvaged or do I have to start with a new install?

We need more information to determine what is happening to the installation. What version did you install, where did you install it, where did you install grub, is this the only OS on the machine? The grub error 15 is below.

15 : File not found
This error is returned if the specified file name cannot be found,
but everything else (like the disk/partition info) is OK.

Specs for the machine itself would be helpful too.

Old PC's often have a HDD limit in BIOS.
The first boot partition must be below this limit.
Or Else error 15.
Just had this problem on an old lappy with 137G limit and160G HDD
First partition M$ shrinked.
Had to move the Linux boot partition to below this limit
When the OS takes over the settings you can use the space above this limit.

Wow!  You guys are very quick to respond.
Here is as much info as I know how to give:
HP Pavilion MN# 3867
10 G HDD
PCLOS 2005
I did try to install Xandros but was not as impressed as with PCLOS so I tried to install PCLOS next and came up with the Error 15.  The Xandros install is the only thing I did different than I with the installation of PCLOS to an old laptop.  I made the newbie assumption that PCLOS would overright Xandros.  Was that my mistake?

This computer will be used to get my wife on the internet so she can chat with her friends.
Should I uninstall Xandros or format the HDD?  Then should I install PCLOS after wiping all the old info and files?

We still don't know exactly what you did, as we have no details, so I would say yes, start totally fresh. Then, if you have problems take notes if necessary to tell us step by step what you did, what you expected, what you actually got, and if anything, what you've tried to remedy the situation.
