[RESOLVED itself - Not!] Kaffeine stopped showing video.
« on: March 04, 2010, 10:32:33 AM »
The last couple of days, kaffeine has started showing a black screen whenever playing video. This is regardless of what file format, be it mp4, avi, rm or other. Sound is playing.
Another hint - perhaps - is that the black screen shown is always the same size, regardless of the size of the video (not) playing, so to speak.

It worked fine prior to this, but I have no idea what I might have changed on my system - actually, I don't recall changing anything, and since there are no updates...

I tried completely removing and reinstalling to no avail.

When starting a file from command line, I get something like this:
Code: [Select]
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
Xlib:  extension "Generic Event Extension" missing on display ":0.0".
socket(): Address family not supported by protocol

Dragon and MPlayer shows the same files fine.

I haven't got the foggiest where to start looking, or what additional info to supply. Could somebody please point me in the right direction?

Cheers!

CJ,

This is a long shot, but, I was having something similar happening.

I think it only happened with files that were samba shares located on a different machine or on one of my NAS drives.

What I found was that if I transferred them to the desktop, they would play.

Then, I discovered that if I set Kaffeine up as the default player for that file type, it would play them over the network.

Then some of the other players would refuse to play until I made them the default player.

I am assuming that the new release of kde4 will fix this little problem.

Also, Kaffeine will not play samba shares accessed via the network unless you install xine-smb.

ThirdOfSix, thanks for the suggestions. I do not use Samba, and the files are played from a mounted ext4 partition. Also, kaffeine is my default.
I did try copying onto the desktop, but no luck. As you said, long shot, but...

Cheers!

And that was that... today, it magically came back. I have no idea why, only thing I have been playing around with is VirtualBox, shouldn't have any effect on it. I have noticed somewhat strange things going on with KDE4 and graphics. I will sit tight and hope many issues shall be ironed out with the later version.

Cheers!

Nope, issue has started to show up again.
The only things that I am playing around with (only using, not installing or configuring) these days are VirtualBox and krandr. I suspect the latter is a more likely candidate, as I use it to switch between single and dual monitor layout (twinview).

I am not to bothered as I hope that the fresh install of the soon-to-come 2010 will stabilize it...

Cheers!
