questions about E-17
« on: March 11, 2010, 09:18:47 AM »
Hi all...
i just saw some vedios and read some nice things about E-17 and i wonna try it....
just had a couple of Qs,
first... can i use KDE or GNOME applications in it??
and i read a reply here someone saying that installing E-17 from LXDE is somehow better than from KDE...
is there a difference if i started E17 from KDE4 or from LXDE??
if i log into E-17 from the login screen will the other interfaces installed affect the speed or functionality of it??
third and most important .... what is the catch here???
how comes an interface so beautiful and full of eye candy and still very very economical with resources is not so popular??
any mines down there??lol
Hope that one day ill be able to help as much as I'm being helped now...

Yes

Speed, LXDE apps are less demanding

I don't think so

In the first place is very different to XP, just recently became more stable, it's apps are no too feature rich.

I've been using it for some time now on a daily basis at work and found it stable, fast and pretty but I'm a standard user, just text documents, presentations and some images, I'm not programmer or a designer.

Welcome to the e17 Club   ;D

Because it is the never-ending story  ::) , anyway a few days ago that "Rasterman" project leader , made an announcement.
"After ten years we are about to make big news".

Greetings and welcome to e17 Club. ;)

Do not miss the section of artwork in the animated wallpaper that I will put to e17Club , is simply spectacular.  ;D

well im sooo excited about this e-17 thing... i see how people are feeling good about it and i believe that ill enjoy it...
but now im having a problem...
first i installed it from KDE4... i updated my system fully from synaptic and installed task enlightenment and also "e17 themes agust"..
things worked fine as a start...then suddenly when i was exploring around i had a crash and an error message saying something like"oops this doesnt have to happen but looks like there is a problem with Enlightenment libraries"
i had 2 options either to debug or exit...
then it just logged off...
whenever i tried to login again it gave me the same message again and i couldn't log in...
any ideas here??
shall i uninstall and reinstall again or anything??
Hope that one day ill be able to help as much as I'm being helped now...

I have no idea since that never happened to me, if you can't debug now maybe the reinstall is the best option but wait to see if somebody with better knowledge appears

Well I've finally decided to install the Beta to better understand your problems with E17 + Kde.
I do not like but for now I'm not having any problem is more that pleasantly surprised me how well it works.

>drhadidy , e17 restart when prompted, watch that moment or that program is using, it is also possible interference with any theme or any emodule.

I repeat time and this works very well.

ok...i was making a lot of trials in the last couple of days trying the other interfaces....
to be honest i was shocked...i was locked in KDE now for long denying myself the pleasure of trying other faster and lighter interfaces...
i still cant start E17.... but im so intreated to try it... i love the eye candy and lov the idea that the system works fast while having them:-)
now im connecting from LXDE...shocked by how fast and light it is...
ill download and install LXDE and from it ill start my E17 experience...
just a little Q...i like some KDE&Gnome applications... do i have to install KDE4&Gnome to use them or what??
thx guys
Hope that one day ill be able to help as much as I'm being helped now...

i reinstalled the whole packages and it works like a charm ;D ;D ;D
now im starting the new adventure... thx for everyone who participated in making such a beautiful light interface...
i will be adding my questions and remarks under this topic...hope i wont bore u to death guys:-)
first... now i connect using a ADSL router... using pppoe protocol.
from KDE and even LXDE i can connect to internet by right clicking the network icon and chosing active interface ppp0.
in E17 when i try that i dont get the ppp0 option... i get only eth0 and eth1....
so i have to log into KDE or LXDE first...connect to internet then log out and login again into E17...
now after its connected i find the ppp0 option!!! but its not needed already... any ideas about that?
another thing...
when i tried the weather forecast gadget i found it set to sofia... i tried to change it to where i live i couldnt!!as instructed i went to "weather.yahoo.com" and chose my city but couldnt get the right code...
the URL is
 "http://weather.yahoo.com/russia/tulrskaya-oblast/novomoskovsk-2122515/;_ylt=ApyKh9z2pTsODxRbvm.rPhmLYDIB?unit=c"
where is the code in here?
third( but not last 8) ;) :P) i want to add the arabic and russian languages to keyboard...i switch alot between the 3 languages...
used to do that from the KDE panel... now when i got the language module gadget i found it empty with no choices...
how can i do that??
those are the primary points( we didnt reach the moving background yet...lol )
thx good people:-)

Hope that one day ill be able to help as much as I'm being helped now...

Hi drhadidy , e17 has nothing to do with internet connection, if you use LXDE or Kde desktop connection is based.
Do not use for Entrance login manager, use Gdm or Kdm.

The e-module Forecasts , use code the Yahoo , code Rusia + 2122515 , exam: mine is SPXX0021.

Languages look here , this in Spanish but it sure will serve him.

In e17:
Menu/Applications/System/Monitoring/NetApplet or just open PCC and set it up there.

drhadidy,

please read the addlocale info, esp. Important Notes point 1:
Arabic is not supported by the e17 WM, e.g., the menu. However, after adding Arabic with addlocale all applications for which Arabic translations exists will be in Arabic in e17. Only the e17 menu layout is not available in Arabic but this is a minor problem.
