sound error new instal
« on: March 10, 2010, 04:55:18 PM »
I am a right nooby, help. I installed pclos on my desktop after having three months of nightmare with vista then 7 and eventually finding I couldn't get xp back ............ so here I am and very happy to be here. The first thing I love about this OS is I can get my Speedtouch modem running, that is why I chose pclos. I am however a bit miffed about the 'error device /dev/dsp can't be opened sound server will continue using the null device' when booting. I have no sound working. Running an ATI IXP SB400 AC'97. Can anyone help. Tried set up sound in utilities folder and this goes through process but still no sound. Click on speaker icon which is crossed out and Kmix is a blank page. Help please.

OK welcome to the forum (you are my first  well maybe not lo) ok you are getting the info right but you need to elaborate a little more on the equipment and the OS.

Now for  example  my rig info is at the bottom of my profile I think it kinda saves time.  Also when you are you using the kde 3.5 or the kde 4 or the gnome edition well if you are patient your answers will come

for instance do you have a video card like mine

update

I have tried to modify the modprobe file  only after I tried the PCC and still nothing . now here is the fun part I've just reinstalled using youcantoo frozen repo  had the same issue then i updated everything problem solved

then something happen at 5 till 3:00 pm because my screen saver. Which happens to be a big giant clock seems to have froze. I was about to question the kids since you would need a password to disable it. I simply moved the mouse and the password prompt came up it seemed that its back to normal until i have tried to play an avi video and kplayer froze really bad(i.e. push power button ) then I've lost the sound on the web and my kde sound at start up

The really funny part was i was about to start this topic but the update had solved on my problems earlier.  so you see jonnyboy there are some bumps in the road but it won't last long  so keep hanging in there

well I hope this info at bottom of page helps. I think I may be struggling here as my integrated graphics has been upgraded therefore it's built in sound capability is not being seen by OS... perhaps...perhaps not. Still no sound.

OK well the first thing I did was cheated I went into synaptic and installed volume control apparently when I did that thats when  my sound came back but i did that and alot of stuff at the same time so it didn't occur to me until happen to notice that my default volume control was not working but the new one was in control

now my case is a little bit different i had to reinstall my video card driver then i have installed the volume control but first i did edit the line modprobe file as text mention the above  thread.

so now my VLC is working also kaffeine is up and going also. I hope this helps

Hi guys just thought I'd pitch in for a while

johnnyboy, for your (and our) info; the full hardware specs for your machine (unless you've altered them) are here.

If you go to the PCC select the Hardware section and select Browse and Configure Hardware. Go down to the Sound card section and you will see any detected sound cards. There should be only one. Can you confirm what the reported card(s) is/are and what driver module is/are being used?

EDIT
Does sound work from the live CD? If so what is being detected and what driver is being used?

thanks for coming in with some advice 7272andy, sorry i have been offline for a while but my Win7 Laptop keeps calling to me...... the sound works on it so i forget about my problems with linux pc  ???

Your advice is really practical, thanks very much. Here is what i have found out from the control center, hardware configure instructions you gave me.

‎Identification
Vendor: ‎ATI Technologies Inc
Description: ‎IXP SB400 AC'97 Audio Controller
Media class: ‎Multimedia audio controller
Connection
Bus: ‎PCI
PCI domain: ‎0
Bus PCI #: ‎0
PCI device #: ‎20
PCI function #: ‎5
Vendor ID: ‎0x1002
Device ID: ‎0x4370
Sub vendor ID: ‎0x105b
Sub device ID: ‎0x0c81
Driver
Module: ‎snd_atiixp
Alternative drivers: ‎unknown

Also the sound does not work when running from disk, same error message. I think the drivers are all fine and the problem lies with my KMix sound mixer. When i open this it comes up as a blank window and does not seem to be running correctly. How do i reinstall this program? Also annoyingly the settings option at the top of the KMix window has disappeared, i think i clicked something i shouldn't have.

Sorry to be so long replying here, but it seems this is not the simple problem it first appeared.

For your KMix menu, open KMix and press Ctrl-m and the menu should return.

I have a lead on the driver but no solution yet, on the other hand you are not alone with your problem with this card; there seem to be a lot of calls for help with no real solutions.

Back soon

Regards
Andy

EDIT
I have made some progress, but I need you to confirm which version of PCLinuxOS you are using.
Is it
  • PCLinuxOS 2007 updated to current with KDE3
  • PCLinuxOS 2007 updated to current with KDE4
  • PCLinuxOS 2009.x updated to current with KDE3
  • PCLinuxOS 2009.x updated to current with KDE4
  • PCLinuxOS 2010 beta

have you tried running the latest live cd beta to see if your hardware works (reccomended as an new install will be required soon)
