Pclos slow and not updating

I have a strange problem on No1 box.

I first noticed Firefox and Thunderbird were getting very slow to open. Then I noticed Synaptic was also slow to open. Then I noticed I could not update my system from Synaptic. I even tried changing to a different repositry. I am now using the  FreeBSD repositry. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing. If I click reload - Mark all updates, there don't appear to be any updates to load . From what I understand I think this is all browser related, could it be a Firefox problem? I've read a lot of posts about Firefox being slow but why doesn't Synaptic update? Is there a recommended repo for Pclos KDE 4 desktop? If I use Konqueror its there in milliseconds where as FF takes upto 10 seconds to open! It's like using Windows again! . I have tried renaming .Mozilla file but no different.

Are you referring to the new PCLos 2010 KDE4 beta distro?

If so, their haven't been many updates released thus far so I wouldn't be overly worried

If you haven't had ANY updates at all you may want to try the heanet.ie repo as that always seems to work for me.

I don't think your Synaptic speed issue is FFox related but my FFox has also slowed down somewhat since going to the 2010 distro

If you using 2009.2 KDE3.5 the repo's have been "frozen" for some time (see link which has important info)

If you updated 2009.2 KDE3.5 to KDE4 through synaptic I'm unsure whether those repo's are being updated or not - maybe someone else can help you out for that.....

No more updates in Synaptic, that's it, end of road for 2009.2. KDE4.3.4 is as far as you can go. The only way to go forward is with a fresh install of the new PCLOS 2010, in Beta at the moment. ISO (Beta 1) available for download.

In the url bar in Firefox type about:config

search for network.dns.disableIPv6

change it from False to True

See if that doesn't take care of your issues

Out of curiosity (and interest), what makes you think that he needs changing it to True? It should be there by default.

Out of curiosity (and interest), what makes you think that he needs changing it to True? It should be there by default.

Perhaps it should be, but mine wasn't and reading the forum this more there was a post about this same type of problem and they changed it from false to true and that solved the issue for them also.  Anyway what does it hurt to at-least check it anyway?

I tried pretty well everything suggested all to no avail. I have now started using Konqueror which is lightning fast. However, I still have the same problem with Thunderbird. The icon is in the panel, click, wait 10-11 seconds and it opens then acts as normal. Close it and I have the same problem when opening it again.

D'you find "10 seconds" too long to wait for TB and FF?

Err, yes actually. 10-12 seconds is Windows territory. I packed Xp up because of 5 minute boot times and 10 second program startups to come to Linux where users brag of lightning speed and no hassle.

Well, I've never had instant/lightning speed with any distro or OS. I find 10 seconds quite acceptable but perhaps my machines are not that good compared to the latest.
