SD ISOs?
« on: March 08, 2010, 10:26:56 PM »
With many of the newer machines coming out with SD card readers built in is there a way to create a SD installation card rather than burning a new CD/DVD when a new release comes out?  I know CD/DVD media is cheap, but so are SD cards and they are reusable.

Just a thought -- Jim Lees

isn't the same procedure as liveusb?

form most laptops is just point to sd slot and tell it to boot from there

there was a post explaining lots of details but i can't find it(and can't remember the name  :-X )

i am sure of one thing, a external dvd drive will be faster than the sd card when you try to boot form it or install from it

specially when you want to do partitions and accidentally delete the sd partition with the livecd in it  :-X  :S

I was wondering how to create the ISO onto the SD chip.

I can't agree about the speed thing,  I think a chip would be faster since, as a minimum, you would not have the head latency.  As far as deleting the chips partition, all the chips I have have a locking switch on the side -- you know, like the old 3.5 not so floppys did.

Pick up a USB memory card reader..    Plug the card into the reader then plug the USB connector into the computer.

Google for "memory card reader", or "sd card reader".    They can be had for as low as 11 dollars....

I've got a sd-usb powered card reader.  Don't see why what wouldn't work to create a live-sd.

I have to agree with T6 the SD card is SLOOOOOW to boot from.  I too use to think it would be faster till I actually tried it, boy was I ever wrong.

It appears that I've been unable to make myself clear.  The thing I really want to know is HOW to make live SD.

Just point it to the sd instead of the usb.  I don't see why it wouldn't work.

Almost, but not quite.   :) :)  What I want to do is not to create linux on a stick,  I want to create the equivalent of a live CD (you know -- the one you install pclinuxos from)  But on an SD card rather than on a CD.

I was wondering how to create the ISO onto the SD chip.

Pick up a USB memory card reader..    Plug the card into the reader then plug the USB connector into the computer.

I tried having Amork write to the SD card instead of a cd -- It looked at me like I was nuts.
