Canon IP4500 - how to install the RPM drivers?
« on: March 08, 2010, 03:48:34 AM »
Hi - sorry for asking such a basic question, but I´m seeking help to install the RPM drivers to get my Canon IP4500 working.

I´ve downloaded the RPM and the Common Files from the Australian Canon web site...........

http://support-au.canon.com.au/EN/search?canonsearch=1&lang=EN&category=Printers&series=Colour%20Bubble%20Jet%20Printers&model=PIXMA%20iP4500&menu=Download

.....and I´ve read (well...er...skimmed over) the posting at ...........
http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,67717.0.html

..........but as a newbie I have no idea how to install the rpm to get my printer working....

Any help very appreciated.

cheers all,

Hi feandur, welcome here.

Since you're new, what version of PCLinuxOS are you running?

In general installing a rpm driver goes: rpm --install name of driver.rpm
Hereto you have to go to a konsole and make sure you are root.

I recall installing ip1980 drivers from Canon. There were 2 (two) rpm's needed.
Check that as well.

But if you run the latest Beta my guess is that driver is included. Hope this helps.

Hi feander,

bicol_willem is correct - the 2010 distro (and the 2009.2 distro) setup my Canon Pixma IP4500 with no trouble whatsoever!

As soon as I turned the printer on PCLos correctly identified it as an Canon Pixma IP4500 and Printerdrake set it up automatically so you shouldn't need the rpm install.

Note: Its not considered wise policy to install software from outside the PCLos repos - doing so can  break your setup and also make it very hard to correct and subsequent problems
PCLinuxOS 32bit KDE 4.10.1; kernel-3.4.11-pclos1.bfs & 64bit 3.2.18bfs; NVidia GeForce 8400GS 1GB 310.19 driver

Guys: Thanks for the posts...Looks like I have the Canon ip4500 up and running....well at least I´ve now got a test page printed out !

Thanks bico_willem:
Confirms what I was thinking, but never ran script before, so appreciate the guidance.

Thanks Droopy:
Brilliant man! Thank you so much for your time and effort. As per my note above to bicol_willem, I have not scripted before to do a forced install, but you have provided a great template to follow to script in root. Cheers man!

Thanks menotu:
Unfortunately, being Irish, nothing worked well for me first or second time up....but menotu you convinced me to give it another go, and I got there, sort of.

Here's how it went down....
I went to the blue spanner [thanks Scoundrel] and went into root and , with the printer turned on [this time] got Print drake going...Sadly it could not detect the printer ¨Printdrake could not determine which model your printer (Canon IP4500 Series on usb://etc etc etc) is. Please choose the correct model from the list" {I have paraphrased}...So, I used the drop down list...which now had PIXMA IP4500 [ I am sure the last time I tried this there was only IP4000..which didn´t work...but I have done some updating since]...I got to the Test print and it would not activate the printer...Dead as a duck in water. So, finished, and tried printing a .pdf...got a ghost script errorx11, and no page output, tried a word (ops, Open Office) document , still no good.

So hereś the weird thing... I went back into print drake, clicked on ADD PRINTER, it went through itś business, then offered me automatic or manual configuration....selected manual configuration, selected A4 paper, and changed the default RGB color to CMY color, then ran a test page...and BOBS YOUR UNCLE...seems to be now working OK.

I just now have two printers listed IP4500 and IP4500_1......but it is 11:37pm local time...so Iĺl deal with that another day.

 JOY is having a printer!

Thanks all...

feandur

FYI - I have to install drivers for my Canon MP240, which I did like this:

1. Unpacked the driver package from the Canon website.
2. Opened a terminal window as root
3. Navigate to the location where the rpm files are unpacked.
4. Enter the command:
rpm -ivh *.rpm
5. Define a printer as normal using the PCLOS Control Centre.

regards,

Malcolm

Gutin print does not support that model?  It supported my Pixma ip2000 printer and it works great.

When they changed the name from Gimp Print to Gutin Print with version 5 they added a hole bunch of support for Canon printers.
