Looking for definitions of various interfaces/distributions
« on: March 05, 2010, 01:06:10 PM »
Hi & thank you for reading

I am aware of KDE and GNOME, as well as XFCE-- but while trying to find out more about E-17, I was hoping there was a more complete description of what it is (& what it is not).

I went to the download area and saw a screenshot, but no definitions.  I am wondering about whether it is designed for older/lighter equipment?  Did see several references to Netbooks- but also saw that several were using it with machines at work and home (so assume not just limited to Netbooks).

I did see Tex's definitions of MiniMe & Zen-- just wondered if there is a spot that describes each version available?

Thanks for your help
katie

Thanks, daveysprocketbrew
That is a very helpful dialogue and a very helpful attachment by GuypronouncedGuyn-- it does help to answer many of my questions.

katie in my experience Enlightenment runs great in old equipment, I use it at work everyday,  I have Kde4 + Enlightenment and the KDE4 apps runs faster.

The best combination still is PCLinuxOS LXDE + Enlightenment I have used it in P III with 128 MB as a live CD and installed it in P III with 256 MB.
I shall pass this way but once;
any good therefore that I can do,
or any kindness that I can show
let me not defer nor neglect it,
for I shall not pass this way again.

Once again, enlightening information from Crow. I am running PCLinuxOS 2009.4 LXDE, sans Enlightenment, and I am more and more impressed with it every day. My Linux box is a candidate for the landfill, by Microsoft standards, but PCLOS LXDE really flies on it. Changes are on the way, however, for LXDE, so patience might be advisable. A new PCLOS LXDE release could soon be coming.

Please forgive my ignorance-- what is Enlightenment (& is it in the Repositories--  since the freeze I have no even looked in the repositories).  I try to read the forums every day (& do most days)-- but somehow I am behind the curve on that one.

And thanks also, skyhawk, for the word on LXDE-- yes, most of my equipment is older (P111 & P4 for most-- and I try to find at least 256 for each)

I am  a bit nervous about KDE4- but know I will have to move on as everyone (at least on those capable of KDE4)  that is what caught my attention today about E-17.

I think the OP was looking for advise and I have been using e17 on a regular basis in a work environment  so: why not?

skyhawk give it a try, you won't regret it   ;)    I agree, the LXDE remaster that Neal did is great is just that I love a pretty face  ;D

katie  "Enlightenment"  I use it as a synonymous of e17 (which maybe is not because there is e16 too) and it is in the repositories (look for task-enlightenment if you want to try it) I have KDE 3.x at home and I'm using the repositories from YouCanToo  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,65202.0.html  at this point seems safer to me.

BTW  you're right skyhawk soon it will be new version of everything  how soon?  well, when it's ready   ;D

Some of us are PCLinuxOS e17 users, Agust designs fantastic themes for it and each month there is a thread to show your PCLinuxOS desktop, in February  ef2000 posted a screenshot and put "here is another installment for the e17 club"    http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,68042.msg559480.html#msg559480  and some of us liked the idea  ;D

There are some great themes, if you have some time you should look at them.  BTW  Coffetime just put an e17 video  http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,68900.0.html

Wow!  That is way cool...

I am installing lxde and then going to put on e17, just to learn it on my virtual machine.  I may install it as my main os if I can get used to it, and once the new release comes out.

By the way, how hard is it to put one of those themes on?

Talk about a fast desktop, and it is only using 60mb of ram...  I will have to spend some time to figure it out but so far I really like it.

The good news are that Linuxera and Sproggy will make an e17 remaster using the final version of PCLinuxOS 2010   ;D
