how do we install KDE4 from scratch TODAY??-(solved)
« on: March 05, 2010, 06:41:35 AM »
:o OK I think my question needs a "news bulletin"-style reply
Suppose TODAY 5 March 2010 we have
-A wiped clean PC
-a fresh livecd downloaded today with the KDE 2009.2 iso
what steps should one take to have a KDE4 environment (with foreign locales)???
...
I ask this because Ive been trying to set up 2009.2 (in order to turn to KDE 4)lately several times and I come up with problems with repos
..I mean which repo should I use best? should I Update KDE 3.5 before turning to 4? should I load locales separately (neither add locales  seems to find necessary files )
 ??? ::)

Hi pclosgr

Quote
-a fresh livecd downloaded today with the KDE 2009.2 iso

You do NOT have to download 2009.2 again as it will NOT allow you to update to the new 2010 distro that's due out shortly.

You have to download the new KDE4 2010 distro (not sure what the .iso will be called yet) and do a fresh install

I would install the new 2010 .iso the same was as you installed the 2009.2.iso and do any necessary updating when  they appear.

I would back up any important data / files / settings / you have to a separate Hard Disk, or USB Stick or some such as the new install may wipe out your existing setup (unless you install the new 2010 distro to new partitions)

Lastly, this is a beta version and not the final release (that will come out after all the testing has been carried out)

edit: I would guess you do the LOCALE install the same as you did on 2009.2;

Repos: Not sure where you are located but I always find the heanet.ie repo very stable

But, he did explicity ask how it could be accomplished TODAY (I presume that indicates he is aware that this will be a non-issue when the new .iso is realeased).

I would suggest:
1) Installed from most current .iso (2009.2 as of this writing).
2) Setup YouCanToo's frozen repo, switch to it, and perform a full upgrade.
3) Switch to another ("unfrozen, but frozen for 2010?") repo, and perform another full upgrade.
4) Change the repo's setting, replacing "kde" with "kde4"
5) Perform another full update (need to select "task-kde4"?)

N.B., this is off the top of my head an UNTESTED !!!  Mea culpa!!!

...perhaps doing this in a VM as a test run may be prudent (although I can't do that at the moment)...

...just thinking...you could start with the 2009.4 LXDE (slightly newer, smaller upgrade path?), maybe?

Pags
I think you got exactly what I mean!
I want to install 2009 KDE (2010 will be tomorrow-not now!)on 2 pcs : mine at my job and a friend's
I have two installations at home one 2009 3.5 and another 4.3 (I turned to that as I couldnt "find" -I am newbie- way  to make PCC work again -stopped after full update)
I have never been able so far to use mklivecd properly!!
So I would like to start from somewere "stable" /turn it to "Greek" properly(my friend cant use/learn in english environment)/update it
I also thought of LXDE-I ve "just" installed and full updated a LXDE recently
BUT since I am not very good at it and I cant spend many hours on "testing" repos at work(probably the wrong way as I Dont KNow how)-I HAVE to work on ...DOORS system ::)
I wonder what a proper "roadmap" for KDE (4) for today would be ???

-by the way if I make a complete update >synaptic downloads downloads...downloads lets say 200 files>does the updates >comes out with some warning message (i'not good at it)>problem occurs (lets say PCC wont go further the LOGO screen by any means)> how we UNDO??? ( I thin we cann't!!!can we?) SO??

if you want to do this today and have a Greek KDE then I strongly suggest to stick with KDE3:
1) install the 2009.2 iso and do not update anything
2) setup YouCanToo's frozen repo in Synaptic, then update everything
3) run addlocale (the one in YouCanToo's repo, version 3.3-2) and add Greek
4) in Synaptic, add task-lxde

if you want KDE4 then wait 2 or 3 days for the new public beta of 2010.

good luck,
-p.

My apologies pclosgr - I thought you were referring to the latest KDE4 distro everyone was waiting for.

Once again please accept my apologies.
