sfdtux, you might try using a different driver just to see if you can get booted up on graphics and then work out problem.

Update - FYI to all who have helped....

Fourth  attempt to upgrade my PCLOS KDE 3.5 machine to KDE4 - again with problems and issues - mostly what seems to be a video card issue. Funny that I get different results on this machine every time - sometimes the card gets recognized but will not respond to higher resolutions beyond 1024x768 ( I am using a ViewSonic monitor capable of very high resolution ). Sometimes I get a good install/upgrade but I loose the Panel or it behaves very strangely - like no icons - just bands of color in boxes which  don't make sense - and the Desktop Icons blink repeatedly.

On a good note - 2 other machines in this office are running PCLOS with KDE4 very nicely. A low end Shuttle PC and a new  DELL Vostro laptop.

So - before we spend anymore time on this and - because I just feel that PC has some hardware issues and it's  not worth the effort,  lets call this "SOLVED" - I do have machines working just fine - the bad one goes into the store-room! Besides - it won't be long til PCLOS 2010 with KDE4 comes out of beta.

Thank you all again.

Check the sum5 to make sure you got a good burn. Turn off your computer, start computer, put cd in drive, boot cd. Your drive is flaky. Oh nevermind not gonna waste my time on this.

Thanks to everyone who donates. You keep the servers running.

Wow - Tex !  I didn't mean to cause a row!  PCLOS is  one of the best Distros I have ever used - I have converted many a machine over to it for a bunch of people. Just that once in a while something just won't play nice -

Ok - so we keep trying.

Regards.

Tex wants to know about problems with the beta. So if you start to tell him about one and then bail out half way through describing it you leave him with the knowledge something went wrong but no means of fixing it...

Also, using the word ooopps on a Linux forum is confusing, because that happens to be the first word of a kernel panic message. I don't know whether you were expressing your frustration or reporting what you saw...

OK - KJP -  it was a little frustration - we are a tech house supporting Army and some commercial stuff. We test many many OS / hardware combos. We have a lot of folks who like the PCLOS distro.  The "burn" I used was good - the CheckSum verified. I didn't get very much further than watching the screen fill up with "dev/sda6"  repeating itself like a stuck record ( ah -- maybe you guys won't remember records :>) ).
Anyway - there was very little to report other than that - I just threw it out there in hopes someone saw that too.

OK - the burn was on an HP burner using HP DVD +R disc. I am going to start all over and use another burner and DVD -R disc too.

The machine is a clean - Intel based PC with a new SATA HD, same Nvidia FX 5700 LE card ( we have a bunch of these ) 1 gig RAM and not much else to get in the way.

I'll log - watch - and - copy any errors - IF ANY :>) and report back soon.

We like the Distro and want to see it progress.

As I was working on a step by step install of 2010 beta 1 - I saw that 2010 beta2 was released - I opted to get that ISO, do the burn,  and run with that. I am happy to say the entire procedure ran flawlessly.

I installed 2010 beta 2 on the same machine I was having all my previous issues with trying to upgrade KDE3.5 to KDE4 etc. I keep all my data on a second drive - so a clean install would not affect it.

Now we have something to work with !!  - 2010 really looks great.  All the hardware on this machine - including the video was properly detected and installed. OpenOffice took a while to install but once it did - no problems there either as it easily opened all our files.

I fed it a bunch of USB devices like my Sony Walkman; SanDisk Thumb drive; and  a "My Book" USB drive and - so far - those were correctly detected.

Installing our networked printers was painless too - and we have various HP printers - old and new.

All - in - All  a very nice looking OS.

That being said - thank you all for the input and patience - now it's on to put it through some paces.

I guess we can call this one "Solved" ??
