Downloaded Linux version of Lexmark X6675 Printer

OK, I've downloaded the file to install my printer, but being a newbie at Linux, I've tried to use KPackage to extract and install but it keeps failing.

I'm not even sure if this is the correct software to use.  the file ends in tar.gz.

hello and welcome to the forum!

pclinux probably has the lexmark printer you need

open synaptic package manager

it is probable that you will need to update the installation to get the latest packages and drivers for your printer

there is a lexmark package in there that will let you check ink levels, use the scanner(if it has one) and other basic functions, also print 

in synaptic press the reload button and apply all updates, do a search there for task-printer and for lexmark

it will be many packages, will take some minutes

after this you can open pclinux control center(wrote root password)and in the hardware/printer follow the steps to add the printer

there could be other posts mentioning this printer, you could find more information that this by doing a search on this forum on the desktop hardware section

It seems that this particular model is not in the repos yet.

That will give you a .tar.gz file (it may be the same you already have. Just make sure is for rpm based distributions).

The .tar.gz is a compressed file. Put that file in its own directory, and extract it using ark or other archiver.
That will give you a "shell" file; that you can now double click and it should install the driver.

I did a test installation, and it seems you have to install the driver first, and connect the printer when it asks you to.

INSTALLING SOFTWARE FROM OUTSIDE THE REPOSITORIES IS NOT RECOMMENDED.
It may cause problems, it may not work, it may break your operating system.

Do as T6 recommends first, and search for the printer. It's not listed in my system, but double check all the same.
If it's not there, you can try installing the downloaded driver. I have installed Lexmark drivers downloaded from the official Lexmark site before, and they have work without a glitch.
