E17 running slow [Solved]
« on: March 02, 2010, 06:20:45 AM »
I installed E17 to give it a try and must say I really liked it as it was different. However after a few hours and the only thing I added was a couple of desktop wallpapers, I began to encounter freezes and everything running slow if at all.It also affected LXDE so unfortunately I had to remove it.
Just wondered if anybody else has encountered these issues?

did you installed it as task-e17 or choosing packages one by one?

what apps did you had running when this happened?

Did you use the the YouCanToo repository?   I think that at this moment is safer if you are using PCLinuxOS LXDE that by the way is the best combination.

Is the first time that I know someone finds E17 slow, I'll wait too for your response to T6 questions

"Is the first time that I know someone finds E17 slow"

i was going to say exactly the same but i don't have enough experience with e17 to say that

i forgot to ask, kernel used and system specs(cpu and ram)

did you installed it as task-e17 or choosing packages one by one?

what apps did you had running when this happened?

I typed 'Enlightenment' in search and then installed 'e' package.
Now that's interesting because I just looked in Synaptic for task-e17,so would I possxibly have installed the wrong package?
To be perfectly honest I cant recall which apps were running at the time but possibly only Firefox and Thunderbird.

"I typed 'Enlightenment' in search and then installed 'e' package."

if you installed task-enlightenment you did it well, if just installed package called e, you did it wrong(you just installed 1 or 20+ packages required), try installing task-enlightenment and test again

firefox and flash is a possible problem

about hardware you have almost the double on everything i have here, those specs should run kde4 very well

T6

Thanks for that I'll give it another try.
I gave up on KDE4 some months ago as I couldn't get any sense out of it and whatever I tried couldn't get a fix.Always NVIDIA related problems and so slow you wouldn't believe.Strange because before that I ran KDE,Gnome and now LXDE all extremely rapid.

The'YouCanToo' repo' doesn't seem to be working???

Install only the package "task-enlightenment".
Works fine and fast.
If it slows, it may be because you have some application running in the background.
Open console and type "top" , to see what application is causing the problem. ;)

Greetings:
Agust

PS:As said Crow "LXDE + E17" is the best option.

Many thanks to you all, its working a charm since installing the correct task-enlightenment package :)
I'm glad I asked the question now and sorry if I wasted peoples time.
I'll look forward to the iso being released now.

i find faster kde4 compared to gnome but e17 makes me eat dust(the cpu dust?  :D )

what you describe is the old kde4 desktop effects attacking again, kde again screwing up things, in kde3 i had the same problem, i had the stupid idea of enable transparency and shadows  >:(

try compiz in kde4, you will see a absurd difference, or even try it without any effect, doesn't hurt and still looks very well

you didn't, that is the function of the forum

Hi T6

Thanks for your explanation on KDE4 which I appreciate.
Being a relative newbie to Linux I have one heck of a lot to learn as you will appreciate.
I did try all of your ideas and many more to no avail and I'm not one to give up easily. However this one beat me and after much time asking questions and trawling the forum,I couldn't find a fix for this.Even replaced my graphics card!!
I shall wait for the KDE4 iso to be released and battle on because I love the look of it!!

Regards to you

Your install was fully updated?   I have KDE4 + e17 in this laptop (I'm writing from said laptop) and I can use KDE apps in fact I usually use Konqueror, I have it in favorites (right click) as you can see in the picture.

If you want raw speed or you have a limited computer go for LXDE + e17  if you want the standard apps go for the normal PCLOS + e17.

Crow, like you I have KDE 4 (2010 beta, but have kde4 on server with MM 09) and E17 (on all my hardware as an alternative desktop environment).  I love E17 for it's simplicity and speed.  It's just as easy to access menu from desktop as it is the start button.  I love the site of E17 and how it doesn't slow any of my apps down.  I had started using it way back when, then gave it up for a while, but now I'm back to stay (E17, that is).  I can play on Secondlife, a virtual world simulator which required constant rendering on E17, whereas there is just too much competition between that and KDE 4 compositing and I end up with some problems there.   I'm just glad we have a choice.  Isn't that what it's all about??
