Keyboard & Acme (SOLVED)

Hello again,

  Is there any way to install and configure the Gnome Acme keyboard tool in KDE3 ?

  I understand from reading other forums that it won't work properly in KDE.

  Alternatively is there a native KDE programme which will allow me to make use of the extra multimediia etc keys, and possibly allow me to assign strings to other keys?

acme depends on the apps you configure in gnome, the default audio or multimedia player in gnome will be called when you press the multimedia key, the same with calculator and all the other keys

under certain circumstances this is good but not that good, the real problem i found is when you need audio controls

in kde3 and kde4 i found keytouch more than enough for my requirements and i haven't been able to make it crash in 6 months, it is on repos and it also support keyboard profiles, completely customizable and if you know console commands for most apps, you can do whatever you wish with this app

Strange that Synaptic didn't turn up Keytouch when I searched for <key kde> ! It found only Acme.

Just enter "keytouch" (without the quotes  of course) and that will find it

   It works, even though it doesn't support my particular keyboard - the most important keys work.

you don't need to have support as on a specific profile, you can use the keytouch configure tool and give a value and a name to each key, then give a app to each one, many of the 18 keys on my keyboard wasn't recognized with a name but they are working very well(el cheapo keyboard)

for some weird reason i had to configure and then restart system, keytouch works as a system service and required to restart after reconfiguration to work properly

  Thanks. Yes, I eventually discovered the restart problem and also how to make the 'mail' key activate
Kshowmail, but I cannot see how to make, for example Ctrl-K do the same thing. Only the extra keys
seem to be re-definable, I can't so far see how to programme any other keys.

  However, there's little point in re-defining keys to launch programmes which can already be launched
with a single click, e.g. if you have icons for them on your desktop and single-click launching of desktop
apps initiated.

  My keyboard is an Advent, but works as a Microsoft Comfort Curve 2000.

the ctrl+k, if you don't have compiz or kde4 desktop effects using it, in kde control center you can remap this and many other keyboard shortcuts, as a example win key+d(show desktop, also called F13)

mine is a standard keyboard(can't remember the name, PS2 standard perhaps) and i was successful getting all the keys on it

my specific requirement was my pc key, calculator key, multimedia keys(including audio player) and volume keys

as you say you can create shortcuts but for the functions i mentioned, this keys are very useful and i like to have my desktop as clean as possible
