Thanks for the responses. Even the facetious ones were entertaining. I've discovered what the problem was (as there is, now, a clock on my top panel). With 3D effects on, Konqueror sits (or lays) on the screen sort of like a place mat; neither maximized nor minimized, but rather unmaximized or resized to illustrate a 3D effect. To get it full screen, I have two options. First I can right-click the Konqueror window on the bottom panel and then select "maximize," or from the top tool bar under "settings," I can select "full screen mode." The former, right-clicking from the bottom panel, maximizes Konqueror, but leaves all the panels intact. That's the mode I'm in now. The latter, selecting full screen mode from settings, causes Konqueror to take up the entire screen, covering all panels as well. It was not, before, clear to me that when in full screen mode, exiting full screen mode would restore the panels.
I might add that in order for me to have konqueror maximized and with panels showing, I have to select "maximize," first and not use full screen mode at all. I admit that maximize, minimize, unmaximize, resize, full screen mode, exit full screen mode, and various combinations thereof had me confused. I only assume that I'm not still confused.
