want to install OPera 10.10
« on: March 01, 2010, 06:42:38 AM »
I think this goes here, if not I apologize.
When I run Synaptic I get "Libxcb-util-devel". It has been this way for months.
I think I am running PcLinuxOs v 0.3.3-1. If this is not the latest, how
do I update PcLinuxOs? I thought Synaptic took care of that.
If I search for "Opera" it says it's not free. Does that mean I can not use it?
I am becoming disillusioned with FireFox and would like to install Opera.
How do I proceed?
Thanks for any help.

Hi shankie

When I run Synaptic I get "Libxcb-util-devel".

? ? ?

Have you selected a different repo and done a "Reload" ?

As PCLinuxOS 2010 KDE4.x is due out very soon, the Synaptic repos are "frozen" therefore no more updates available 'til after the new 2010-KDE4 beta distro is out (and NO, I don't know when it will be available - it'll be ready when TEX-and-the-all-STAR(s) have it ready)

I think I am running PcLinuxOs v 0.3.3-1.

PcLinuxOs v 0.3.3-1. ? Are you sure of that? Check by going into PCC - Control Centre - and check Help > About - and this will tell you the version you are using

If I search for "Opera" it says it's not free. Does that mean I can not use it?

Opera is free to download and use the same as all apps in the repo, so go ahead and download/install

Thank you Menotu for responding.
Tried several different repositories and they all gave me the "libxcb-util-devel".
I went into the control center and it said I have KDE 3.5.10. Is that a version of
Pclinux?

I take it that I should only download "Opera" from the repositories?
There are several in mine but they must be old versions as I can't update
the repository.
Looks like waiting is the better option.
Been doing some reading (gets me into trouble). Looks like I need to upgrade
to kde4 BUT HOW? Also it might be to soon as I read about lots of bugs in it.

I'm not sure I fully understand - when you say the repo only shows you;

"libxcb-util-devel".

What do you actually mean by that?  are you saying that is what you see when you first open Synaptic?

Nope - the KDE 3.5.10 is the actual desktop environment (DE) that you see when you first log in to your desktop area and is running all the things you see on your desktop.

The KDE developers who code/create the 3.5.x DE have stopped developing it in favour of going to the newer KDE4 DE (which is what PCLos is going over to when the new 2010 beta distro comes out soon)

Yeah, install it directly using Synaptic (I think the current version is 10.0 or 10.1)

In synaptic I hit "Reload" and then "Upgradable". That's when I see "libxcb-util-devel".

The "Operas" I see in not installed are as follows:
Opera                   not free    10.10-1pclos201
Operaqt4             not free    10.10-1pclos201
Opera-unite         not free    10.10-2pclos200
Opera-unite-qt4  not free    10.10-2pclos200

Gotcha!  Synaptic is showing you that this is the only file that needs updating (I think its a library file for the X system)

If you are not having any untoward behaviour you may want to hold off updating it (or not as the case may be  ;) )

Opera  not free 10.10-1pclos201

Whenever I use Opera in VirtualBox I use the above entry to install it and that seems to work just fine - I'd imagine if any of the others need to be installed Synaptic will pick up on it and install them as well (or notifiy you)

See the following link posted by Texstar, BUT as PCLinuxOS KDE4 2010 will be available shortly you may want to seriously consider holding off. (or possibly installing it to another partition or hard drive)

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php/topic,63698.0.html

NOTE 1:  the new PCLinuxOS KDE4 2010 beta distro requires a fresh install so you may want to begin backing any data and settings you want to keep...(alternatively, if you have your "/Home/ on a separate partition you can re-use that - I know lots of forum members are planning on doing that - but I think I'll just copy any data back over to a new /Home)

NOTE 2: If you want keep using KDE 3.5x YouCanToo  froze one of the repo's (see following link) which will be available to use, with the proviso that it will stay in its current state. Read YouCanToo's post for more info.
