VNC Viewer for PcLOS
« on: March 01, 2010, 01:56:27 AM »
I use this software to connect to my office desk at work, with windows.
In the options of this software I have the option of "encryption always on".
I have tried to do the same with different distros but never been successful.I tried with tightvnc.

If I disable the encryption option at work, will I be able to connet then?
I would just love to have the vnc viewer as it is in windows as it's so easy to configure and use.Is it available?
Any suggestions?
Thx

There are several VNC tools in PCLOS, here are some that i'm aware of which exist in Synpatics:
gtk-vnc
kdenetwork
tightvnc
tsclient
x11vnc

That should pretty much cover you  ;)

last I checked VNC is not a secure protocol; If one of your clients suggests that is it, my GUESS is that it is sending it over ssh, etc.

FreeNX is a pretty easy to use solution for secure remote desktop access between windows and linux.

Even easier is using Hamachi (aka LogMeIn) to create a VPN between computers, then use standard KDE tools (krdc) for remote desktop access between computers.. just make a note of the hamachi IP on the work machine before you go home.  The nice thing about this option is you can use Samba/CIFS to access your remote data as if it was local (if you don't want/need the full remote desktop solution).

..both are in our repos, and also have windows clients available from their respective web sites.

That's not fully accurate:

http://www.realvnc.com/support/faq.html#security

Quote
VNC Enterprise and Personal Editions include support for strong encryption and authentication of VNC connections. VNC Enterprise Edition additionally supports native authentication against system user accounts. Both versions are specifically designed to be used across untrusted networks such as the Internet.

However:

Quote
How secure is TightVNC?

Although TightVNC encrypts VNC passwords sent over the net, the rest of the traffic is sent as is, unencrypted (for password encryption, VNC uses a DES-encrypted challenge-response scheme, where the password is limited by 8 characters, and the effective DES key length is 56 bits). So using TightVNC over the Internet can be a security risk. To solve this problem, we plan to work on built-in encryption in future versions of TightVNC.

So there are full secure versions of VNC (Enterprise Editions), and the basic ones offer security over password only.

At work I have the Enterprise Edition of VNC which is encrypted (I believe). It´s a pitty that I cannot just install VNC viewer in PCLOS and run it.
TightVNC can´t connect because I have the encryption activated at work and Tightvnc does not support it.

I´ll have a look at Hamachi.

Actually, you should have no problem installing the same VNC you have, it runs great under Wine in Linux, i've used it myself several times at work.

Yes but last time I tried I could not move files from the computer at work to mine.
Has this changed? If so it would be great  ;)

I'm just trying now VNC with wine and can't copy the files I need from WinXP to PCLOS.

With Logmein file sharing is only available in Pro version.

I think I will get a dropbox and use that.

Thx

..did you actually try to mount a remote filesystem using samba/cifs?

It's been awhile, but it worked last time I tried; perhaps they are restricting more features in the free version now (..my guess is that the free client does not do the setup for you, but it may still work if you set it up using standard linux methods using the remote hamachi IP..  I used it this way just a few months ago) ??? ???

I will give it a try again when I get home (1-2 hours).
