Reloading Grub / boot loader?
« on: February 27, 2010, 09:21:02 AM »
Hay all I know this is or was in the form some where but I can not find it nor remember how so help some one can help.

One of my systems is dule boot W7 Trial/Beda & PCLinuxOS. Well The beta expires Monday so to keep windows will need to reinstall. I am just going to reinstall windows over its self rather than wipe out but when you reinstall windows the Grub menu gets screwed up.

I dont want to reinstall Linux to as I don't really need to. I remember you can repair / restore the boot loader from the Live CD using console but forget the commands. Can some one remind me how to restore it , so MS causes me as little pain as possible, and I can boot in to Linux with out reinstalling it?

After your Win install is working, shutdown, put in the PCLOS live cd and boot. When KDE is up look in the System Menu - System > Configuration > Boot and Init > Redo MBR. Click on that and it should restore grub. Shutdown and reboot without the live cd. If there are further problems you may have to edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, but grub should pick up PCLOS and Win.
Using Linux for over 18 years and still counting.
