Sound Problems - LX3000

I just picked up a set of MicroSoft LX3000 headphones.  They work great on the Gateway running XP(Just gotta play WoW ;-)  ). 

However, I have a problem on the PCLinuxOS machine (my primary machine).  When I plug the phones into my front USB jack I can hear the test in the Sound Config but nothing will play through.  As long as they are plugged in, I have no sound on the system, except for the Test sound under Sound Conf.  As soon as I take the phones out of the USB jack everything works fine.  I am using ALSA driver - HDA ATI SB (ALC883 Analog).  The digital side of this does not work.  Jack is "iffy" There is no "OSS" option available.

If it was totally dead, that would be one thing.  But to have them work in Test mode and not when an app tries to play is curious.

Check to see if you have Pulseaudio installed. if yes, uninstall it and check your sound again.
Depending on what you have installed, this may affect something else, but you could re-install if it causes other probs.
This fixed my sound problems.

I did and removed it.  That was last night about 11:30.  It is now 10:27 and I am back up.  What happened was that I used Synaptic to remove "all" Pulse files and caused "Xorg.conf" to get a cramp.  I tried using the older version, no go.  I tried doing some editing in "X86Config" and again, no go.  So, I did a reinstall and just now up (KDE4, updates and restores/patching back, ect.)

Now, for the "acid test" will the phones work on a fresh install?   Nope.  In fact the phones did not even show up as an option.

So, where to now coach?

A misunderstanding indeed. The intent was to remove only pulseaudio. Removing the libpulse... files is what caused your problem of having to reinstall.
Have you tried plugging in a pair of headphones directly in your sound card?
