change the driver to vga graphics(in pcc), the most simple and common driver before removing your video card

If I understand correctly, in PCC "Set up the graphical server" under the selection "Graphics Card" I should open  "XOrg" and select "vga." Should I also change the current selection under "Vendor/NVIDIA" to something other than "GeForce 2 MX to GeForce 4" or just leave it as is?

if you set a gforce 4 and you install a gforce 6 the driver could not work as expected

all you have to do is xorg vga so the new video card will not use the older driver that will not work for it

after you install the new one you can set a more appropriate driver for it

Thank you for the help. I have never tried changing hardware in an existing PCLinuxOS installation and I wanted to make sure I didn't foul something up beyond my ability to get it running again.

I think I have found a decent graphics card (EVGA GeForce 6200 AGP 8x w/256MB memory) for not a lot of money ($40).

Be interested to see how you get on.

Good luck.

menotu:

In My PCLinuxOS-2009.2-KDE4 installation where I had installed the "NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.16-pkg1.run" graphics driver, I deinstalled it with "CC=gcc-4.4.1 && NVIDIA-Linux-x86-96.43.16-pkg1.run --uninstall" and then I ran "video" to see what would happen when I tried to set up the vga driver.

I could not get the vga driver to start with startx, no matter what different display settings and options I tried. One setting with a resolution of 1024 x 768 @ 8bpp did present a screen full of hash in the test phase, but nothing else I tried worked. Maybe if I had tried 640 x 480, it might have worked, but that setting is what Windows uses in Safe Mode and sometimes it is impossible to see everything that's on the screen.

I finally selected the "nv" driver and accepted the default display settings that were presented me and then I could start the X server.

I did all of this for this installation because I could afford to foul it up, since it was kind of a test installation for KDE4 anyway.

My hope is that the new graphics card will also accept the "nv" driver, or I might not be able to get it installed.

menotu & T6:

I got the new graphics card installed without a hitch and all of my installations are recognizing it with the correct driver installed. I had to fiddle from a console login a few times to run XFdrake before I got the card fully functioning in some of my installations. I'm writing this from the 2010-beta1 installation where the boot process kicked me out to a single-user root prompt where I had to run XFdrake to set the card's driver active. Then after I typed Ctrl-D, the boot process continued to completion where I could login properly.

I have desktop effects enabled and the speed of the system is only slightly slower than it was without them.

I downloaded the 2010-beta2 release, but I haven't yet installed it. So far, except for a boot problem, I haven't had any problems with the 2010-bet1 release.

Thanks again for all of the help you supplied toward getting me to realize the problem was hardware.
