Instead of telling us only what you can't do, how about filling us in on what you can do. Do you arrive at a terminal login? Can you log in as root? If you do log in as root you could type pcc at the prompt to get the ncurses version of the control center, from which you could set up your monitor and video card again.

Hint... you navigate about the app with the arrow keys, the Tab key, and the Space bar, to select from the choices, then use the Enter key to execute the choice.

I see what you mean. I can get into the terminal and log in as root. Tried the things you mentioned and still in the same boat. It's funny because the installation went well as always but now I just cant get into the GUI.

going try to start X from the terminal and I will let you guys know exactly what is happening.

Now here is what happens when I try starting X; first I get a window that pops up give me the option to choose between compiz fusion and no 3D desktop effects. I choos no desktop effects and then get a message that I must log out and back in for the changes to take effect. takes me back to console and there I type reboot. Then the system comes back up and into the console I go.

Did you setup the video card, and did you test your settings before saving them? What video card do you have, and what driver did you select?

Trying my best to set up the video from the command prompt but there is nothing much it allows me to do from there. I trying running the live CD and and running the video set up from there to see if that would help but still nothing.  :'( :'( :'( :'( . do you think I should apt-get any software that might be missing?? Just asking those questions cuz I am so out of the answer. I guess if all fails I will have to do a complete installation again.

I am thinking maybe I should have done a full upgrade on the KDE 3 before doing the full upgrade to the latest software.

Pcc from the command line allows you to do everything in pcc that you would do with the GUI version.

Went in there, settings look fine. I use an ATI card, x1200 series. I guess I will go ahead and reinstall the OS.

Sparky, one last try. Run "video" from the command line and see if you can configure something from there that makes since.

Guys thanks so much, I will just go ahead and reinstall and use a different approach when I upgrade. Will keep you all posted.

Just a thought - and maybe way off target  ??? )

Do you actually need to reboot from the console? What about trying to log back into the desktop instead of doing a full reboot? (possibly using startx ) ?

Sparky, this sounds like a problem I had last year. Here's the solution Tex gave me:

In terminal, as root
XFdrake --auto

Note the two dashes. This recreates your /etc/X11.xorg file and should get X up and running properly with each boot.
Fair warning: I am a whiny, selfish brat who should be denied access to 2010, per a moderator. Box: Acer Aspire One 110-xxxx model. XP wiped (and flushed), 2010 gnome (despite mod) grafted onto 8g flash HD via livecd.

Guys thanks a million  :D :D. I went ahead and reinstall cuz its not like I had data to loose. Was doing a fresh install on one of my machines when that happened. Had a dual boot with windows but now the machine is 100% linux. LOL!! No more winblows. But I will hold the last post close to me just in case this happens again.

Peace.
