"Beat this:"

i can't, where could i find 32mb ddr modules to do it?   ;)

"If I were to but new at this time I would select 8GBs of RAM."

if you are talking about the maximum, i heard about a intel mainboard that can go up to 24 gbs and since next pclinux will support 4+ gbs of ram...   ::)   ;D

"I don;t do a lot of video encoding but do use VBox quite a bit."

video encoding uses ram but not much, you can encode with as low as 16 mbs but with low speed cpu it is a torture

virtualbox will benefit from the extra ram but i only see a reason to give more than 1 gb to a virtual machine, run games and afik it is doesn't do this well enough

2gb is enough for pclos.
I think 1 gb is enough for reasonable use, as long as you're not editing video or huge graphic files

Yep I was there, too- but the concept was buy all the RAM you can afford. And so we did.
Now of course everyone can afford 4 gigs which is as much as most Linux users need. Of course Vista can use more.

Funny you should say that, since I will be editing videos on occasion.

4KB?!? Sounds like the Sinclair... ;D

Well, I have an Intel P4-800 dual cpu system.
It had 512MBof ram and PCLinuxos 2010 could just about run. I could do one thing at a time. If I tried 2 things the system would freeze for ages.;
I upgraded to 1.5GB of ram, now all is sweetness and light. I can mirror Aarnet, pick up email, play a dvd or listen to music. The machine is totally different to the one I was given.
Having said that, I also hace a Soltek motherboard with an AMD2700 cpu in it and 1MB of ram. This machine I find limiting in as much as I expect something to work in a flash and it dos'nt.
Soooo. Yes the more ram the better.
One machine has 8GB os ram and at the moment Mandriva 2010 is on it, less said the better, but when I click on something and I expect it to do something,,,,,It does, straight away..no thinking about it.

When I first started using PCLOS on my Dell Inspiron 1300 it had 512MB and ran reasonably well, but I certainly noticed a difference when I upped it to 1.256MB.

I've recently installed W7 in VBox and although it would run with 512MB it needed 1GB to run properly (I run Adobe CS4 on it which can be really greedy memory wise) so I swapped the 256 module for a second 1GB bringing it up to  2GB as leaving PCLOS with only 256MB while running VBox was causing some serious issues. Didn't really notice any difference in PCLOS performance after the upgrade - still just as good as ever  ;)

Nahhh - even before that.  And it took 32 RAM chips to get there.
